I am Dr. Jerry W. and I am a recently retired mathematics educator, having been in mathematics teaching positions since 1982. My degrees are an AS in Pre-Engineering (1985), a BS in Mathematics (1979), a MA in Mathematics (1990) and an EdD in Curriculum and Instruction (2014). While studying to earn the degrees I often worked as a private tutor to local school students and college classmates, as well as in graduate assistant teaching positions. I have taught eight years in various public/private high schools and over 25 years in college/university positions. At my last teaching position I enjoyed the challenge of teaching evening adult math courses from 1994 to 2014. In recognition of my teaching ability, it was a distinct pleasure on four occasions to receive "teaching excellence awards" from institutions where I taught during 2005, 2008, and twice in 2014.

I worked very diligently to learn many different mathematical subjects and was extensively tested/assessed. During regular teaching I would provide instruction and tutoring to all types of students who were preparing to take some formal assessment such as the ACT, SAT, or Praxis I or II exams. In college I taught these courses: Liberal Arts Math, College Algebra, Business Math, Pre-Calculus, Logic and Set Theory, Linear Algebra, Statistics & Probability, and Calculus I &2.

My instructional style is very conversational, as teaching is a two-way street, and not a passive endeavor. In my professional opinion, mathematical content must be "seen, practiced, and assessed" for genuine long-term learning to occur. The teaching awards previously mentioned were the result of professional teaching exemplified by competent, clear, correct, and compassionate instruction; patience with individual learning styles and speeds; appropriate and reasonable follow-up practice, i.e. homework; and fair and appropriate assessment, with credit earned for student efforts to correct mistakes.
