Bio

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I have a very strong background in math and its applications in the real world. Whether it's preparing students for the SAT or teaching middle and high school students in the classroom setting, or helping two youth solve a mathematics application problem in the real world of Mexico City as a church prepared for a baptism by filling a pool, I emphasize the importance of knowing the fundamentals as well as the understanding needed to apply them.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I have a very strong background in math and its applications in the real world. Whether it's preparing students for the SAT or teaching middle and high school students in the classroom setting, or helping two youth solve a mathematics application problem in the real world of Mexico City as a church prepared for a baptism by filling a pool, I emphasize the importance of knowing the fundamentals as well as the understanding needed to apply them.

I like to help students overcome their challenges in Math, and see them move on to understanding how their skills can be used to solve real world problems. In addition to solving problems by hand, I like to show them techniques for solving the same problems using technology, whether it be a calculator, or use of software applications on the computer.

My background is in Aerospace Engineering where I studied at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC and received my Bachelor of Science (1990) with a GPA of 3.6 and my Master of Science (1992) with a GPA of 3.9. I continue to love mathematics as a lateral entry teacher at West Bladen High School, Bladenboro, NC.

I have taught the SAT/ACT Prep class at the high school level. As a mathematics teacher, I am very knowledgeable of the math content that will be tested on the ACT. I can therefore assist in each of the sub-topics as needed.

As a photographer, I am experienced in using Adobe Photoshop to enhance photographs beginning with both JPEG and RAW formats. I am a current user of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CC. I can help you to better understand and utilize layers and masks to better achieve your envisioned image.

The recent switch my NC to the Math I, II, and III Common Core standards does not limit me as far as my content knowledge. I have taught and am knowledgeable in the Math I curriculum and can help your student become more skilled and successful in this subject area.

As a student at NC State University, I studied Aerospace Engineering. During my studies, I learned and applied Calculus to real world engineering problems. My studies of Calculus began at the high school level. More recently, I was fortunate to teach the AP Calculus A/B at the high school level for several years. I absolutely love and enjoy this subject matter, and would love the opportunity to assist your student in gaining a better understanding and grasp of this material towards greater achievements in their college and career aspirations.

As a 12 year art student, I was able to develop my ability to think creatively and spatially. As a highly qualified Math Teacher in NC, I have taught this material on several occasions. I first used this software when I was given the book by my employer at SAIC to learn this database program. I used it frequently in the compilation of Safe Shutdown Equipment Lists for nuclear utility clients. These were edited and queried for information towards utilization in probability risk assessments to develop equipment maintenance schedules. I have more recently used the software to develop parent contact lists and logs in my teaching career. I am familiar with the databases, queries, and forms capabilities of the software. I am less familiar with scripting, however I can also apply some SQL in the query feature.

As a professional in the business world, and as a public school teacher, I have utilized MS Excel for calculations and data analysis in a variety of applications. I am experienced in using this software for financial and budget reporting and analysis, as well as its application in the math and science arenas. I have been a long-time user of Microsoft Outlook. I have used it as a central email client for multiple email platforms such as live.com, Gmail, and for my own photography business email tied to my domain. I use it daily in my teaching career. I am very familiar with its Email settings and options, such as custom signatures, as well as Calendar features. I am also familiar with the plug-in feature such as Google sync capability. I also am well versed in creating appointments for the calendar from email, as well as Tasks to keep track of important To-Do items.

As a teacher in NC, I regularly use MS PowerPoint. I can help you add style to your presentation, understand slide layouts, transitions, etc. I can also assist you adding audio to your presentations, or other multimedia as needed. I can help you finalize your presentations, export to a USB drive for portability, or even prepare handouts to accompany your presentation. I will help you with any other need as well. I am experienced with document layout in a variety of applications such as brochures, tests, worksheets including images and user created graphics within the program. I have a long history using MS Windows beginning with Windows 3.1. I have assisted other users in troubleshooting on the Windows platform, including the Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and most recently Windows 7. I am familiar with software installations, as well as hardware issues using the Device Manager. I am very familiar with the Control Panel as well for various computer settings including Audio, Display, etc. to make the Windows environment more user friendly. I am also familiar with many free and paid software apps to keep Windows running smoothly and for anti-virus and malware cleanup and protection.

As a 20 year professional, I have utilized MS Word in both the home, home-office, and business environments. I am familiar with the general features as well as more advanced features available in this software. I have worked as a professional photographer and videographer for about 10 years. I have good experience in film and digital photography. I have worked with both point-and-shoot as well as the SLR cameras (both film and digital). My most recent experience is on the Canon 20D digital SLR, and the Canon 5D Mark II digital SLR. I am comfortable with shooting in all modes, even manual modes for obtaining the desired look and quality image. I have also been helpful and managed 2nd shooters in the wedding setting. Most recently, I continue to help my sister as she has started her photography business. I regularly consult with her on proper camera settings and equipment for diverse photography areas such as wedding, sports and portrait photography.

I like to show students how to approach various problems, look at a problem from different points of view, and likely choose more efficient means of solving problems to save time on this test. The SAT can seem overwhelming, but together we can work to "tame the beast" so that your student can more likely go into this exam with increased confidence and skills!

This is a fascinating and powerful area of mathematics. I have been fortunate to teach trigonometric concepts as part of the NC math curriculum. As an Engineering student, I applied these concepts to a variety of problems. I would love the opportunity to help you understand the trigonometric functions and identities.

As a wedding videographer, I intially shot and edited my own footage for DuraMemories. I used the Adobe Premier software on a Windows platform. I am also familiar with video editing using Windows Movie Maker, and the paid software, WonderShare. I am familiar with editing from start to finish, adding title screens, cutting/splicing footage, as well as adding audio and sound effects. I am also familiar with adding scene changes. I have experience producing DVDs with and without menus, and also producing and uploading YouTube content. My skills are also easily transferable to any software a client may be utilizing, such as Final Cut Pro on the Mac platform.
