I had amazing teachers in math and science in high school and wanted to share my ability to be the same to my students. I wanted to make a difference in their lives, whether it was a science experiment that made a student become a teacher or a different way to divide that helped a student struggling or maybe it was just the freedom when that test taker got up and used manipulatives to help him solve that problem. I just wanted to help students learn and I did for over 30 years. Whether it was in my sixth grade math classroom working cooperatively, in the science lab following the steps to an experiment ,or in the gym playing Pilo Polo, my students were successful and had a good time doing it. Later, it was teaching Algebra and Pre-algebra using Hands-on-Equations and Alge- Blocks or using drawings such as box method to show different ways of solving Quadratic Equations. I always tried to incorporate the CRA method to teach math, the use of concrete, representational, and the abstract. I also used I do, we do, you do to teach. In other words I explain the lesson and demonstrate a few problems and then the student(s) and I do a few problems together. Then the student does a couple of problems by him or herself and again I check for misconceptions or misunderstanding and correct these before I turn the student loose to work on their own. Those are a lot but not all of my teaching strategies.
I have tutored for the last four years both virtually and in- person. I tutored middle school small groups and I tutored high school Math 1, 2, and 3. I received a student last year with a 13 average in Math 2 and when I finished the end of the year, he had an 84.
Thank you for your time.
