I currently tutor children in math, reading, and writing; ages K-5th grade. I specialize in teaching children with dyslexia to read using the Wilson Reading program and Explode the Code, both are phonetic programs. I help improve Executive Function skills and reading comprehension as well as spelling, math, and writing skills. I work with kids who have advanced skills but are not being challenged by their class curriculum. I also work with kids who need extra support to maintain and refresh academic skills.

I was a psychology professor in Massachusetts for over 20 years. I primarily taught Child Development classes to preK teachers. I have substituted at a private Montessori-based elementary school, with grades preK to 5th. For the past 1.5 years, I have worked as a private tutor in Northern Virginia, with Wyzant and at a tutoring company in McLean, Virginia.

I find it very rewarding to see children who have previously struggled to read learn. I've seen their self-confidence drastically improve along with their reading skills. I think too many children fall through the "educational cracks" because they are not given the support to work up to their potential. I believe tutoring can help students achieve their potential with a customized approach to improve their skills.

I have various ways of teaching elementary math and use a variety of methods and hands on projects and games to promote accuracy. I also use word games and projects to keep kids engaged in reading exercises.

I have experience with the Wilson Reading program and Orton-Gillingham reading method. While most kids learn to read using the sight method, there are many who need a more structured phonetic approach, even if they are not diagnosed as dyslexic.

I work with kids either individually or two at a time to make sure they receive the attention they need. Some siblings can work side-by-side, while sometimes it's more beneficial to work with siblings one at a time.

Exceeds all Expectations

I'm so thankful we found Ms. Fran! She is professional and fun and my kids love her. Since tutoring with Ms. Fran, my son (11) and my daughter (8) have both made significant academic strides and continue to build confidence in learning. We have had several tutors in the past and by far Ms. Fran is above the bar.

Great Tutor!

Ms. Fran was great and my daughter likes her. She was great at explaining all my daughter’s problems. She helped my daughter with her reading and her math.

Knowleadgeable

She is on time. She knows what she need to do. Most important; my daughter likes her. That’s a good start. She tries to make my daughter not bored during the session.

Local, patient, and knowledgeable

Im so glad I found Mrs. Frances! My second grader was falling behind since fairfax county public schools went virtual. We needed help and I was glad Mrs. Frances was willing to teach in person. My child is thrilled, he’s always asking how many more days for the next session.
