Students come to me with ideas and leave with the words, structure—and confidence—to express them. With 25+ years of teaching experience, I specialize in English, academic writing, literary analysis, AP English Literature and Language, IB Theory of Knowledge, and college essays. As a College Essay Specialist, I help students find meaningful topics and express them in their own voices.
As a former college-preparatory school student and a teacher at several college-preparatory schools, including TASIS in Switzerland, I understand both sides of the desk: students’ goals and the expectations they face. I hold an English Education degree, have training and experience in special and gifted education, and am a current IB TOK essay and exhibition examiner with over a decade of examining experience.
As an onsite gifted-education coordinator, I coached North Carolina Governor’s School applicants on essays and interview preparation, including students who earned admission. I bring that individualized guidance to college-essay coaching. As a sounding board, I help students explore their experiences, discover meaningful stories, and shape compelling essays that show admissions readers the person behind the application.
We begin with the student’s goals, a prompt, and a writing sample. We identify priorities: finding a focus, developing an argument, organizing ideas, analyzing evidence, or writing within a time limit. I model strategies, guide practice, and adjust support as students become more independent.
For example, one AP English Language student scored a 2 on my initial assessment. Together, we developed a plan combining essay instruction with independent practice. She committed several hours each week and earned a 5 on the year-end AP exam.
Whether writing for AP, Theory of Knowledge, or a college application, students remain the authors. I teach, question, model, and provide feedback. My goal is stronger writing, greater confidence, and skills that last beyond the next assignment.
