I am a scientist in the medical device industry and a former Texas educator with current Texas certification in secondary science. I have two years' experience teaching high school students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Fundamental to my teaching philosophy is the belief that all students can learn and achieve their academic goals.

Because there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach, I learn my students needs and create lessons and study material that helps engage their unique learning style. In addition to making complex concepts approachable with vivid examples and metaphors, I regularly check for understanding by engaging students with questions at all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy and engage their critical thinking skills

I taught secondary science including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. In addition to my professional teaching experience, I taught college-level biology labs and did molecular/synthetic biology research for eight years. My graduate studies and professional research experience have provided me with a strong background in college-level biological sciences with emphasis on biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and microbiology. I am experienced at reviewing primary literature, designing experiments, and scientific communication.

Some of my proudest moments on Wyzant have been helping learners discover the beauty in abstract scientific concepts and realize that they can engage with topics they previously found intimidating. As an educator, some of the best feelings are when a student says "Wow, that's so cool!" or tells me "That's easier than I thought." Additionally, I have helped multiple graduate students prepare for, and pass, their PhD qualifying exams by engaging in constructive challenges of their hypotheses, experimental design, and understanding of the story their data can tell.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

More than 5 years of research experience in molecular biology laboratories (neuro-oncology, synthetic biology, and neuroscience). BSc in Biotechnology with a minor in Biochemistry. Submitted abstracts for multiple presentations and have grant writing experience.
Biology

Biology

Certified to teach high school biology and chemistry and I have taught college biology labs. I have 5+ years biological research experience with emphasis on molecular biology and biotechnology.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Certified to teach high school biology and chemistry and I have taught college biology labs. I have 5+ years biological research experience with emphasis on molecular biology and biotechnology.
Genetics

Genetics

I have 8 years of research experience in molecular biology and have taken multiple graduate genetics courses. I have completed advanced molecular biology and biotechnology courses.
Microbiology

Microbiology

I have over 5 years of molecular biology research that emphasized synthetic biology. I have 2 years experience teaching secondary science. I have taken multiple graduate classes on microbiology, cell biology, genetics, and biochemistry.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I have 10 years combined experience using Excel for data analysis in molecular biology research applications and business applications (metrics and KPIs). I have used excel to create tables that track time and highlight rows when specific conditions are met.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I have submitted abstracts and presented in scientific seminars and symposia. On Wyzant, I have helped multiple graduate students pass their PhD qualifying exams by reviewing their research proposals, critiquing their experimental design, and asking probing questions to prepare them to defend their proposals.

Understanding and Catering to Learning Needs

Tyler has been a great tutor so far, teaching in a manner that caters to my needs and walking through foundations of molecular biology that I did not realize I had gaps of knowledge in. Rather than just helping with assigned questions and reviewing articles, he encouraged active learning by asking questions to see where my current understanding is at and refine it in a more coherent manner that can be applied for future concepts. By guiding me through his process of thinking in molecular biology, I am better able to visualize what I previously couldn't. Overall, I have learned a lot during the tutoring sessions and sometimes more so than my own classes.

The right instructor!

This wasn’t my first time working with Tyler. He’s super smart and knowledgeable, but what really stands out is how much time he puts into preparing for our sessions—it definitely shows, and students pick up on that right away. Last time we worked together, I was getting ready for my Qualifying Exam, which I had been stressing about for six months. I really wanted to improve my writing and get better at organizing my ideas. We worked on two grant proposals, and each time, we practiced defending them like the real thing. Tyler knows exactly what the high-impact points are, and he helped me focus on those instead of getting lost in the weeds. From now on, anytime I have a tough project or need to talk through an idea, I won’t think twice about reaching out to him. Can’t recommend him enough!

Professional and Patient!

Tyler has been a great tutor for my Son! We were desperate to find a tutor and are grateful we chose Tyler. We tried other online services and were disappointed. This has been a positive experience.

Excellent tutor

Tyler is extremely knowledgeable about biochemistry. He broke down the concepts in a way that was very easy for me to follow and understand. He was patient and made sure to meet me where I’m at. I wish I could take his class instead of the one I’m in!

The Best Biochemistry Tutor I've Had!

Tyler is a very helpful and knowledgeable Biochemistry tutor! I had previously worked with other Biochemistry tutors, but he was the first who had the expertise in the subject to explain complex concepts and help me solve difficult problems in a clear and concise manner. He not only helped me with Biochemistry specifically, but he also taught me test-taking strategies in order to get the score I needed on my exams. He is also very approachable and patient, and didn't make me feel like any of my questions were too basic or insignificant. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for help in their Biochemistry class.

Very Knowledgable and patient Tutor

Tyler and I worked on a lab report for the "Principles of Molecular & Cellular Biology Lab" course I am currently enrolled in. He was very knowledgable on the topic and helped me understand the material which I was not very comfortable with prior to working with Tyler. Thank you for all of your help! I will definitley use Tyler in the future and highly reccomend him!

Exceptional & patient tutor

Tyler is doing a great job helping our daughter navigate high school biology. She said her lessons with him are far more productive than the in person tutor she saw last semester. We look forward to continue working with Tyler.

Highly knowledgeable

He explained to me all the complex concepts in an incredibly simple way. Not all scientists are good tutors, but Tyler is definitely one of the best!! I highly recommend him, especially for grad students.
