I began my teaching education in both the English and Mathematics programs at my college. While I eventually turned my attention solely to maths education, I have a passion for and experience tutoring peers, high schoolers, and middle schoolers in both. I've had multiple positions as a tutor, both one-on-one with individuals after school hours and though my work leading the America Reads & Counts program at the University of Montana, in Missoula. I also substituted various subjects at a private school in Missoula, at both the elementary and middle school levels.
The Education program at my first college, in Dillon, focused heavily on experiential learning, and using teaching time to guide student through an exploration of the topic, rather than rigid practice and memorization. I follow Jo Boaler's methods for teaching mathematics and believe every student has the ability to succeed at high levels.
I completed my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics Education, with a minor in Theatre, in the spring of 2020. For personal reasons, I did not go on to receive a teaching certification. However, through tutoring, classroom observations in a wide variety of schools, and substituting, I have experience with many types of learners. My passion and focus during my program was on how to connect to and foster learning in at-risk students, such as those struggling with poor grades or homelessness.
