Hi! I’m Jacob, a patient and experienced tutor with a background in both math and programming.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Portland State University and have 12+ years of professional experience as a software engineer. I’ve also spent over 5 years mentoring engineers and over 2 years tutoring students one-on-one. I help students understand core concepts clearly, work through problems step by step, and build confidence, whether that’s in Algebra, programming, or modern web technologies like JavaScript, React, and TypeScript.

I break problems into small, manageable steps and make sure each step makes sense before moving on, so students don’t feel lost or rushed. When something isn’t clicking, I slow things down and approach it from a different angle instead of forcing a method that isn’t working.

If you or your student need clear explanations, patience, and steady support, feel free to reach out and we can talk about how I can help.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I help students build confidence in Algebra by breaking problems into clear, manageable steps and focusing on understanding rather than memorization. I’m patient with students who feel anxious, overwhelmed, or like they're bad at math. I regularly help with linear equations, graphing, and word problems, and I adjust my approach when something isn’t clicking. My goal is to help students feel steady and capable working through problems on their own.
CSS

CSS

I've spent most of the last 10+ years building user interfaces utilizing CSS. I'm well-versed in modern CSS techniques and industry best practices. I also ensure that the user interfaces I build are both accessible and cross-browser compatible. I've worked with many engineers on user interface projects and have successfully guided them through common CSS pitfalls.
HTML

HTML

I help students learn HTML by focusing on the fundamentals that make web pages work: structure, semantics, and clean, readable markup. I’m especially patient with beginners and I break everything into small steps so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. I regularly help with forms, accessibility basics, and common debugging issues like broken layouts or incorrect nesting. My goal is to help you understand what you’re writing and feel confident building pages on your own.
JavaScript

JavaScript

I help students learn JavaScript fundamentals clearly and step by step, with a focus on understanding rather than memorizing. I regularly help with variables, functions, conditionals, loops, arrays/objects, and debugging common mistakes. I can also help you get comfortable reading error messages and reasoning about what the code is doing. My goal is to help students think like a programmer and feel confident solving problems independently.
