Hi, I'm Jackie! I recently graduated with my Ph.D. in Modern American history. During my time in graduate school, I worked as a teaching assistant for surveys for both modern and early American history. In this role, I worked with small groups of students to break down the information provided in the main lecture, instructed them on how to properly utilize primary source documents, and helped students tie together long distant events with both the documents we read and the world we live in. Aside from my knowledge of American history, I spent a year of my graduate program working closely with students to guide them through the details of constructing essays at the college level.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the fact that history as a discipline is not fixed but is instead an ever-evolving process of interpretation. As an instructor, my goal is not to simply inform students how to find the “correct” answer. Instead, I teach them how to analyze information and defend their arguments so that they can become conversational in the act of doing history. I encourage students to work through the many difficult moments in history and question their own assumptions about the past as they participate in a variety of activities that reinforce history's contingency.
I use lesson plans that focus on helping students understand the causes, context, contingency, and consequences of the major historical events that are swept over in both the Early and Modern U.S. history surveys. I adjust the introduction of information based off the individual needs of students. In the past, I have used a variety of games, timed writing responses, and lecture style teaching. I am happy to work with students to tailor their sessions to their specific learning styles.
I welcome all feedback and resources from students or parents. I am easy to reach and provide rapid responses. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
