Hello there! My name is Abby.

I graduated summa cum laude with a Master's degree in English (concentration in Creative Writing). During my graduate program, I worked as a tutor in my university's Writing Center for two years. My duties involved reviewing student papers and advising students on how to improve their writing. During these appointments, I often found that talking through the student's ideas/things they were struggling with helped just as much as the time spent talking about structure and grammar. As for those two things, looking at examples was a big help when it came to reinforcing ideas about how to organize a paper.

As a Teaching Assistant, I also taught English Composition for the last two semesters of my degree. After I graduated with my master's last year, I taught professionally at the university for two semesters - Comp 1 in the Fall and Comp 2 in the Spring.

In the summer of last year, I also picked up a part-time tutoring position in the Athletic Academic Services department. In this position, I tutor student athletes for English Comp, various literature courses, and general writing assistance.

Tutoring and teaching have provided me with different challenges and learning opportunities, but the core principles are the same: to me, the most important thing is giving students the tools they need to succeed. I hope that the students I work with take away not only what they need to know in order to do well on this assignment or this paper, but also take away knowledge that they can carry with them further in their education and career.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or to schedule a session!

English

English

I have obtained both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in English. After teaching Composition 1 and 2 as a TA in graduate school, I also taught Comp 1 and 2, in the Fall and Spring semesters respectively, as a part-time instructor. I have tutored English at my university's writing center and Athletics department.
Literature

Literature

In both undergrad and graduate school, I maintained high grades in many literature courses. As a TA in graduate school, I assisted a professor with a British Literature class. I have also worked with student athletes studying for survey literature courses.
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a student tutor at my university's writing center, part of my job involved reviewing student papers. Some of these papers were reviewed asynchronously, so I had to make in-depth comments about the grammar and structure of the paper. As an English master's student, I have had to carefully review the written work of both myself and others.
Reading

Reading

As someone who was a student in English for about six years total, reading critically has been a very important skill for me to hone. I have had to read and analyze works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and technical writing. I have learned how to read for elements like theme, motif, and style, as well as technical/mechanical aspects.
Writing

Writing

As a master's student in English, I wrote many academic papers, usually averaging somewhere between 10-20 pages. My master's thesis was a nonfiction memoir; I wrote about 60 pages of this project to present to my thesis committee. As a tutor, I have also helped countless students write and revise their papers.
