I have degrees in both humanities and STEM fields, 99th percentile scores on both the SAT and ACT, and over a decade of experience teaching college Physics and tutoring both humanities and STEM subjects. In that time I’ve worked with hundreds of people, each of whom was pushing themselves to their own personal edge. There are aspects of teaching that go beyond mere knowledge of the subject matter, and my goal as a tutor is to provide whatever guidance and support you need to achieve your goals, as well as the encouragement that we all inevitably need when tackling something new and difficult.

I began tutoring in the mid 90s while pursuing my bachelor's degree in history, during which time I tutored mathematics and writing. Later I returned to school for a master's degree in Physics and then a PhD in Computational Physics. Throughout my graduate years I taught physics courses and mentored undergraduates. I then went on to teach physics at several colleges. Along the way, I've come to prefer one-on-one instruction and a focus on academic fundamentals, leading me to my current work as a tutor.

I also have a keen interest in standardized testing, and have put myself through the process of achieving 99th percentile scores on all sections of the SAT and ACT tests. Most people can benefit enormously from guided preparation for those tests, and I’m happy to be helping people on that front as well.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’re interested in tutoring or just have questions about the process. I look forward to hearing from you!

A note about lesson scheduling:
If you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson, please do so at least 24 hours before the scheduled lesson time. When a student doesn’t show up for a lesson at the scheduled time, I remain online for the first 10 minutes, after which time the lesson is cancelled, and the student is billed for only that 10 minutes. Cancellation/rescheduling of a lesson with less than 24 hours notice is treated the same as a “no-show”.

Guidance and practice can absolutely improve your SAT/PSAT scores! I’ve been through the process myself, having trained my way up to 99th percentile scores on all sections of both the SAT and ACT tests. I’ve also been teaching some combination of math and physics for over a decade, completing both an MS and a PhD along the way. I tutor each section of the SAT and PSAT tests using a straight-forward method that sticks close to the official practice tests issued by the test’s creators. I work with students to ensure that for each test question they understand: a) the “standard” way to find the correct answer, b) any SAT-style shortcuts to find the answer faster, c) strategies for guessing in case one cannot find the correct answer, and d) the general principles tested by the question. In this way we build familiarity with the test, and fill in any gaps of understanding as we go. I enjoy what I do, and I try to make the process enjoyable for my students as well. Please let me know if you have any questions about the process, or would like to schedule a lesson.

Every student I’ve ever worked with needed to walk their own path to an understanding of algebra. While teaching physics, I routinely encountered students who, despite having passed an algebra class, still needed to go back and talk through the basics until they got what they needed, and got it in their own way. It was there that I came to appreciate what patience, persistence, and individual attention can accomplish. I’ve been teaching and tutoring for over 20 years, with both an MS and a PhD under my belt. I enjoy what I do, and have worked with hundreds of people who were each pushing to the edge of their learning capacity. I will work with you (or your child) to keep you encouraged and moving toward the particular insights you need to succeed in your Algebra I class.

Years of graduate school and teaching have led me to an unexpected appreciation for the basics of mathematics, and a love for helping people find their own understanding of those basics. Everyone’s learning path is different, and I will work with you or your child in whatever way is needed to find those next steps toward understanding. I’m happy to work with students of all ages and needs. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about tutoring, or would like to schedule a lesson.

SAT prep

This was my first time being tutored and I have to say that he was really flexible than many of my own teachers. He hit everything and he didn’t hold back on anything but didn’t try to scare me. So that was really nice.

Awesome Guy!!!

Brad was the best!!! Enthusiastic, fun, flexible and understanding. He was everything we were looking for in a tutor. His knowledge on the concepts were accurate and precise. Jay enjoyed working with him and my husband and I enjoyed listening in lol 😂

Tutor responded:

Thanks so much for the kind words! My lessons with Jay were loads of fun, and I was greatly impressed with the progress she made. It’s always inspiring to work with someone as tenacious, hard-working, and good-natured as she is. I’ll be sending good vibes on test day!

Patient, Supportive Math Tutor

Brad was a great help to my daughter when she was struggling with her algebra class. He is very patient and encouraging, and worked with her at each step to help her understand.

Already helping

Dr. Brad has already helped me to understand the SAT better. I’m learning how to see the test questions correctly, and what I need to do to get faster. And I don’t feel intimidated...he’s very encouraging!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Brad was very patient and knowledgeable. He helped to give a better understanding of the areas Math that would be on the SAT, and how maximize my performance on the test. A+ tutor.

Christopher, 4 lessons with Brad

My son really enjoyed his first session on SAT Math

Thinks Brad will tach him both the math concepts to improve his score, but also the tricks of the test to raise his score even higher than his math knowledge may justify.

Edward, 14 lessons with Brad

Great prep for SAT!

Brad helped me prep for the SAT. Even with just one lesson, we went over specific example questions from the test and he gave very helpful tips. I felt much more encouraged and motivated to take the test :)
