I'm Betsy! I graduated from Millsaps College, double majoring in Literature and Education. Throughout my career, I have taught in public, private, and parochial schools, and have been able to adapt and adjust to meeting differentiating student needs and expectations.

I taught high school, mainly British Lit, American Lit and AP Lit, and for 20+ years have helped my students write college application essays. I was named STAR teacher three times, and chosen as a Presidential Distinguished Teacher recipient. My students have been admitted to UPenn, Rice, Duke, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Bryn Mawr, Wellesley, Tulane, UC Berkley, Fordham, Georgia Tech, Sewanee and UVA, as well as many state universities. I can assist also with scholarship application essays, and have successfully worked with several student on personal statements for medical and law school. Novels, plays and poetry were the heartbeat in my classroom, and a student's "Ah ha!" moment of understanding complex concepts thrilled me. I adore literature, and connecting students to the lasting power of words and thoughts. I have also taught Southern Writers, World Literature, and Humanities/Art History.

Many of the most meaningful experiences enjoyed with students occurred during 12 trips that I planned to the United Kingdom, carefully curated to weave threads between literature, art, architecture, history and culture. My travels afford me a unique perspective that I can share with students. When my two daughters entered the college application process, I began to personally witness and comprehend the stress students experience, and the scope of difficulty and frustration. My focus, although grounded in AP test prep, also grew to encompass entire units training for personal essay composition, with admission and scholarship as the goal. I am ready to help students prepare for quizzes, tests, essays, or reading comprehension, as well as work on collegiate essays, either from conceptualizing subjects or fine tuning and polishing.

Art History

Art History

My Humanities classes studied a timeline of the most outstanding human achievements in expression, from prehistoric cave art and monuments to modern abstract installations and experimentation. I also taught modules on genres and development of dance, music, theater and film. Whether you are learning about Stonehenge, Caravaggio, Bernini, Swan Lake, Nosferatu, Joplin or Our Town, I can help!
English

English

Teaching and assessing compression of literature is rooted in writing. For more than twenty years, I have helped students develop grammar and vocabulary skills that directly contribute to their evolving proficiency as a writer. Sentence structure, tense and voice are critical components of written and verbal expression also. I can help students improve their grasp on the English language, and how to implement their knowledge in composition.
Literature

Literature

Throughout my career, 80% of my AP students scored a 3 or higher on the exam. I majored in Literature at Millsaps College, and am versed in each historical period of American, World, and British literature, and in all genres of poetry, novels, and drama. I can help with comprehension, composition, and preparation for assessments. I also tutor in specialized AP test strategies, multiple choice and essays.
Reading

Reading

Teaching literature is incumbent on reading comprehension. I help students improve literal reading skills, as well as develop tactics to de-code paragraphs for meaning and structure. Many students struggle with figurative language, especially tone and subtext. I can guide students in advancing their critical thinking skills, which will inherently elevate their reading expertise.
Writing

Writing

During my career as a literature teacher, I have assigned and graded countless essays in all genres, and assisted with brainstorming, drafting, editing/revising and proofreading. I can help with literary analysis, research, narrative, persuasive, compare and contrast, etc. I am adept at the process of writing, as well as strategies to polish and refine work. I also work with high school seniors on collegiate application essays, and college students on personal statements for graduate school application.
