I am looking to continue virtual tutoring in ELA: Reading, Grammar, and Writing and tutor those same subjects, locally in person.

I am a knowledgeable, professional, patient, and kind tutor and aim to challenge your children in being their best and boost their test scores.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I attended RIC (Rhode Island College) from 1999-2001 and was accepted into the Feinstein School of Education, majoring in Elementary Education. Then I transferred to ECSU in Willimantic, CT, receiving a B.A. in English and Minor in Writing in 2004. Finally, I attended graduate school at ECSU and majored in elementary education finishing up with my M.S. in Educational Technology. While I do not have specific degrees in EL ED, I do have the background in many EL Ed courses, completed many practicums, and tutored K-6 students. Currently, I tutor a 7th grader through WyzAnt in English, writing, vocabulary, grammar and reading skills.
English

English

I have a B.A. in English, Minor in Writing and a M.S. in Educational Technology. I have been teaching college English classes (developmental and composition classes) for 6 years.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I am qualified to tutor ESL/ESOL students because of both my elementary education background and college teaching background. While taking EL ED classes, I did practicum work with ESL/ESOL students in Providence and Pawtucket Rhode Island and worked with them in phonics, reading, and writing. While teaching at two community colleges, ESOL/ESL students matriculated into my developmental English classes and I worked to help improve their skills in writing, reading, speaking and thinking critically.
Grammar

Grammar

I am qualified to tutor and teach grammar due to my extensive developmental English background.
Literature

Literature

I have been writing poetry for 36 years and am currently working on a book.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I worked as a proofreader at the UCONN student newspaper after I graduated high school. From that point on, I tutored at a community college and part of that tutoring involved teaching adults how to proofread their papers and working in groups and pairs in proofreading workshops. I continued peer review/editing while teaching college-level and developmental English classes. Peer review is a huge part of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing/ proofreading).
Reading

Reading

I have been teaching developmental reading and writing for 6 years. I currently tutor a 7th grader in reading comprehension and vocabulary in addition to writing and spelling.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I am qualified to teach and further study skills because I have been teaching developmental writing and reading for 6 years. Many DEV ED students come into college lacking proper study skills (organization, preparation, taking notes, tips for test anxiety, memory tricks, flashcard prep, and knowledge of pre-test resources). I can help in all of these areas.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

In every English class I taught, I used a Word of the Day activity, which built students' word knowledge. This activity culminated into an end of semester creative writing assignment and incorporated all of the Words of the Day. My rubrics often included a section on vocabulary application as well. When I have tutored, I also included my word of the day exercise as part of a larger vocabulary unit.
Writing

Writing

Hello! I have been with Wyzant only a short time, since December 2015. Prior to this, I taught writing at the college level for 6 years. My main focus has been scaffolding students who are at a developmental level to transition them smoothly into college-level writing classes. In 2012, I earned my certification as a Developmental Education Specialist. I am currently tutoring a 7th grader in writing as well.
