About Donna

For the past twelve years, I have taught College classes (College Reading, Study Skills, Classroom Management, Early Childhood Education, Children's Literature, and Supervising Student Teachers in their Field Experience). Prior to this, I taught Middle School (Reading, Language Arts, and Math) and Elementary School (Music).

I am, presently, teaching online, web-enhanced (part online and part in-class), and traditional College classes. Depending on the subject matter, I have found that many times students do very well with a web-enhanced type of teaching/learning situation.

I am willing to work with students in whatever situation they are most comfortable and most successful.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught many students who were medically diagnosed as ADD or ADHD. Several of these students were given special accommodations for learning (extra time on tests, special seating arrangements, additional teacher assistance and monitoring, specialized homework & classwork assignments/testing, etc.). Often, there was a Special Education teacher in the classroom to accommodate the student for "Inclusion Teaching."

Aspergers

I have taught a sixth grade student with Aspergers. This student, like many children with Aspergers, was especially bright in a particular area of study, but a lower-level learner in other areas. I had this particular student in my Homeroom Class and my Language Arts Class for one year. His exceptional area was Math, but he was always eager to learn in my Language Arts Class. He was very sweet, gentle, respectful and kind to everyone. I worked one-on-one with this student many times throughout the year. He was successful in passing my Language Arts Class.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Master's of Education Degree (AA Mississippi Educator's License) for teaching K-8th grades. I have taught 7th and 8th grade for two years, 6th grade for five years, and grades Kindergarten through 5th grades for one year.

Elementary Math

I taught middle school (6th, 7th, 8th grades) math for 2 years.

English

As a Middle School Language Arts Teacher and a College Reading Instructor, English was a major part of the courses taught. The English curriculum that was taught included -
grammar, vocabulary, spelling, sentence structure, word recognition, context clues, subject/verb agreement, parts of speech, word parts, capitalization, punctuation, word meaning, and comprehension.

GED

I have taught College Education and Developmental Studies classes for over eight years. Most of these college classes were Remedial Reading classes, which is a vital subject area for preparing for the GED.

Because I have taught college level classes, I feel completely confident in my qualifications for preparing students for taking the GED.

General Music

I began my study and interest in music in elementary school. I began studying piano in the 3rd grade and continued through my sophomore year of college. In college, I took Piano (several semesters), Voice, Music Theory, Music Appreciation, and Music History. I have taught Music Classes in public school for 1 year (Kindergarten thru 5th grade), Preschool Music for 3 years, and Private Beginner Piano Lessons (in my home). I have been a Children's Choir Director, and Children's Handbell Choir Director. I presently play music in an Adult Handbell Ensemble and Adult Handbell Choir.

Grammar

I taught Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Grammar, Spelling,Vocabulary)to middle schoolers (6th, 7th, 8th grades) for 6 years.

Microsoft Excel

One of my duties, as a College Instructor, included submitting numerous reports using Excel Spreadsheets. I have, also, used Microsoft Excel to set-up class schedules, lab schedules, student assignments, power points, and tables.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007 Office, Home, and Student, and Office Professional which includes Outlook for more than six years.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have designed Power Point presentations for approximately seven years. I used Power Points when presenting lessons and teaching concepts to my classes. I, also, used Power Points when making presentations at Teacher Workshops.

Microsoft Publisher

I have used Microsoft Works, which included Publisher, and Microsoft Professional, which included Publisher for approximately five years.

Microsoft Windows

I am presently using, and have used for at least ten years, Microsoft Windows on both my home PC and my laptop.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has been my exclusive word processor, since it replaced Microsoft Works Documents. I have used it for typing correspondence, documents, and email.

Phonics

As part of my teaching experience with Language Arts and Reading, students were presented lessons in pronouncing words phonetically. This was part of the Grammar/Vocabulary Study in both Language Arts and Reading lessons.

Piano

I began taking piano lessons when I was in third grade and continued through my first year of college. I taught private beginner piano lessons for three years, directed a children's handbell choir for two years, directed children's church choirs for five years, Piano lessons at the Alabama School for Math and Science for three semesters, and taught Music in an elementary school for one year.

I have been an active member of my church's Adult Handbell choir for 25 (plus) years, the PraiseRing Handbell Ensemble (with my church) for two years, and Jubilee Ringers Handbell Choir of Mobile for one year.

Proofreading

As a Language Arts Teacher (for six years), I taught Writing to my middle school students. One stage of the Writing Process is Proofreading. I taught students how to proofread, and as their teacher, I, myself, proofread each of their (125) drafts and essays. I, also, attended a Writing Seminar in which we proofread and evaluated students essays presented as part of the State Writing Test.

Reading

I taught middle school reading for 6 years and college reading for 6 years. I hold a remedial reading endorsement on my teaching certificate.
