My name is Jim, and I’m from the Monroe, LA area. I was in the LA Army National Guard for seven years, got out, and moved to Germany, where I learned German. While I was in Germany, I worked on several Army posts and on Rhein Main Airforce base as a civilian. In 1998, I returned to the U.S. and finished my B.A. After I received my B.A., I moved to the New Orleans area where, I met my wife. Because her folks didn’t speak any English, I began the arduous journey of learning Spanish at the age of 33 years old.
My wife convinced me to get my Masters of Education, which I earned from the University of New Orleans. Since then, I’ve been teaching ESL to adults and children and also teaching Spanish to high school students here on the North Shore. I excel at breaking Spanish grammar down to where a student with basic English grammar skills will comprehend and remember. I also prepare students to pass introductory college Spanish.
I've been teaching ESL to adults since 2004. For my Master's work, I emphasized the learning styles of adults and how to better use the individuals learning style in order to facilitate learning.
I utilize a variety of methods including: describing our culture in relation to the target culture, TPR, TPRS, role playing, book work, and utilizing survival phrases that non-English speakers need to know in order to conduct day-to-day business.
