About Paula

I am a patient tutor, fluent in Spanish and English, with decades of experience teaching and tutoring kids and adults. I homeschooled our three kids. I can give references. My students have told me that I am a good teacher and tutor. I love Jesus Christ, my Savior. Tutoring and writing songs are my favorite jobs. Some students learn better while moving more and I am willing to walk with the student while doing things like studying spelling words. Having a student jump rope while skip-counting, 4, 8, 12... can help the student to remember better. I especially like to help kids with reading, writing, and math, since these are such basic skills. I make review sheets for students to help them to remember information, and can teach parents to do so if they don't want to pay me to. I also make study aids like matching games with info students need to remember. The feedback from Ray was the only one he was allowed to post. He is happier with my tutoring now. I have a bachelor's degree in educational studies from UMSL and I have been tutoring since 1987. I am a patient tutor, fluent in Spanish and English, with decades of experience teaching and tutoring kids and adults. I homeschooled our three kids. I can give references. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra 1 to all three of my kids in homeschool. I got an A in College Algebra.

Bible Studies

I have studied a lot of the Bible and understand the meaning of the most commonly read passages of it. I frequently learn more about Scripture from talks, DVDs, CDs, and books.

Chess

I win most of the games of chess that I play with kids and some that I play with adults. I have been playing since grade school and I am over 50. I am good at explaining things and I am willing to play "teaching games" in which I warn my opponent how he is in danger when I am getting close to putting him in check.

Cooking

I know very much about nutrition and have been cooking for 40 years for my birth family and my own family. I know ways to make preparation time reduced by preparing some ingredients beforehand to store in the freezer. Also, I frequently use a crock pot, an electric rice cooker, and a bread machine. I am also a skilled baker. Hand-grated carrot cake is my specialty.

Elementary (K-6th)

I homeschooled our 3 kids and all have gotten their GEDs. Two are in the Navy and the other is attending college. I am also an experienced tutor of children and adults and can help a child to learn any subject that is normally taught in the grades K-6. I have an AA degree in general studies from East Central College and I have over 100 college credit in various subjects. I graduated with very high honors with a GPA of 3.9. I have references who will tell you that I explain things well.

English

I have taught English grammar and reading and writing for years. I got an A in English Composition 1 and 2 in college. I am an avid reader.

ESL/ESOL

Since I am bilingual, I understand the struggles of learning a new language. I know English grammar and spelling very well and I have taught ESL. I got an A in English Composition 1 and 2 in college and I taught all of our kids to speak, read, and write in English in homeschool.

Geography

I love geography. I love to study maps and I got an A in Geography in college.

Grammar

I have taught English grammar as a homeschool teacher for years. I have also had to teach some of it in the Spanish classes I have taught to help the students to understand Spanish grammar. I got an A in English Composition 1 and 2 in college.

Guitar

I am over 50 and have played the guitar since I was 18. I played it as part of the music ministry at more than one church. I play and teach the guitar by chords, not by notes. I taught four students guitar at a homeschool co-op from 9/10 to 5/11.

Phonics

I taught my three kids phonics in school for years as a homeschool teacher and I have used phonics in tutoring other kids and one adult in reading. I have an AA in general studies from East Central College. I graduated with very high honors with a 3.9 GPA. I have references which can tell you that I explain things well.

Prealgebra

I taught prealgebra to our three kids in homeschool and I got an A in College Algebra.

Proofreading

As a homeschooler, I have done a lot of proofreading. I have scored well on all proofreading tests that I have taken because I know grammar and spelling well.

Public Speaking

I got an B in public speaking in college. I taught a poetry/recitation class at the homeschool coop. I have given some talks outside of school and I know how to teach people how to organize their thoughts and communicate them clearly without distracting them with odd movements, etc.

Reading

I taught all three of our kids to read in homeschool and I have tutored other kids in reading also. I was told I helped them a lot.

Religion

I am a practicing Catholic and I have studied Catholicism extensively and am prepared to teach it to others. From Paul VI Institute in St. Louis I earned a certificate to teach PSR (religion for students who go to public school).

Social Studies

In homeschool, I taught our 3 kids history and geography. I got an A in these college classes: geography, American history, general psychology, adolescent psychology, economics, logic, non-western music, anthropology, and Spanish culture and civilization. I have references that say that I explain things well as a tutor. I got an AA from East Central College and have a 3.9 GPA with over 100 collge credits.

Spanish

I have taught and tutored Spanish for years to kids and adults. I am fluent in both verbal and written Spanish. I currently tutor two adults in Spanish and you can contact them. They will tell you I teach the subject well.

Spelling

I taught spelling to our 3 kids in homeschool and got an A in English Composition 1 and 2 in college. I am an avid reader and a good proofreader. I have an AA in general studies from East Central College and a 3.9 GPA. I have references that will tell you that I am a good speller and that I explain things well.

Study Skills

I have tutored since 1987. I like to make up games to help students to remember what they study. I also come up with new versions to common games that also help students to learn. I make up reviews for the little girl I tutor for religion, social studies, science, math, and reading. I am willing to teach parents how to do these things so they can save money. A lot of times a student can remember info better if he matches up, for example, a paper with a word on it with a paper with the definition. The arm movement helps him to learn, especially when there is movement across the center line of the body, according to my sis, a special ed teacher. Singing and rhymes are good ways to learn too. Ex. "My nose turns blue at 32."

Vocabulary

I have taught vocabulary to our 3 homeschool kids who are now adults. I achieved a perfect score on the Work Keys test for reading comprehension. I have references that will tell you that I explain things well. I got an A in English Composition 1 and 2 in college and an AA degree in general studies with a GPA of 3.9.

Writing

I have taught our homeschooled kids to read and write in English. One is a nurse and another is going to finish his bachelor's degree this year and is on the dean's list. The other did not go to college but he loves studying and writing on his own. I got an A in all of my writing courses in college and I got my bachelor's degree in education last year summa cum laude. I can also jump-start students to get them to start writing.
