As a community college instructor I taught a developmental reading class. The class was focused on helping students improve key reading skills such as main idea, inference, activating and using background knowledge, distinguishing from fact and opinion, making connections between the text and the reader and the world, developing fluency and ease in reading, summarizing and paraphrasing, finding the main idea, important facts, and supporting details, and other key areas. As a reading tutor I would focus on developing and improving these skills.
