Hi there! My name is Tate. I am a tenure-track English professor at a small midwestern university, and I love tutoring! When I was in high school, the skills required by an English class did not come naturally to me. I had to learn lots of tips and tricks to succeed. Since then, I’ve acquired almost two decades of instructional experience and earned my PhD in English. This long journey continually inspires patience and empathy in me when tutoring students, and it's with pride that I can relate to their struggles, offer those tips and tricks, and imbue them with confidence about their academic potential.
Before receiving my doctoral fellowship, I taught high school English in New Hampshire. As a classroom teacher, I found joy in helping students unlock useful, empowering knowledge about grammar, vocabulary, and reading compression. I taught American literature, as well as SAT and ACT preparatory courses. My dedication earned me the honor of State Teacher of the Year in 2017. Through it all, my teaching philosophy has remained student-centered. I want to engage learners, like you, in diagnostic conversations to better inform my approach to instruction and intervention. Also, I want to mitigate any stress you might associate with essay writing or standardized tests. I promise to listen and create lessons that cater to your individual needs.
