I am a fun, energetic person looking forward to meeting students and helping them achieve necessary goals. I am a determined educator with a passion for teaching and I will do what it takes to make the content understandable to my students. I am a fun, energetic person looking forward to meeting students and helping them achieve necessary goals. I am a determined educator with a passion for teaching and I will do what it takes to make the content understandable to my students. I do not want students memorizing facts just to pass a test but to be able to apply what they have learned to real life situations. Having taught first grade for 12 years and kindergarten for 9, I feel like I have the expertise needed to do this. Over the past 20 years I have walked into a classroom daily and taught reading, science, social studies, and math to children aged 5-9. Other duties I’ve had include: preparing daily reading, math, science, and social studies lessons, attending monthly academic meetings and using data collection and analysis to plan for future lessons.

I worked weekly with a Reading Coach and an Academic leader to look at student data I collected on individual students. We analyzed student data and compared it to school wide data. I used the data to plan for reading, writing, and vocabulary instruction. I also attended monthly meetings to collaborate with grade level teachers and share ideas on how to effectively teach these subjects to students in our grade level. The reading coach and I co-taught many age appropriate writing lessons together.
I’ve done several book studies and implemented what I learned on phonics instruction in the classroom. I’ve taught long enough to watch the pendulum swing back again to the importance of phonics in our reading instruction. I taught reading for 20+ years incorporating phonics heavily depending on students’ ages and abilities.

I have taught all subjects (based on common core standards) since the standards were introduced. I taught in a kindergarten classroom where all writing, reading, math, science, and social studies lessons were aligned with the Common Core standards. I’ve taught for over one year online. I’ve used the standards from each grade level to create individual learning plans for students.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (Minor: Early Childhood Education). Following graduation I took the Praxis exam to become a certified teacher (K-6) in Missouri. Immediately I began a teaching job as a first grade teacher, During my first few years of teaching, I began to pursue a graduate degree. I graduated 18 months later with a 4.0 perfect grade point average and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) I have 12 years experience as a first grade classroom teacher and 9 years as a kindergarten classroom teacher. Each school year and during my summer break I have tutored students of all grade levels (K-8) giving me 21 years of tutor experience.

In the last 9 years I worked monthly with math coaches to discuss student data that I collected in the classroom. We analyzed the data collection and I used the student data to drive my math instruction.

During my time as a classroom teacher, I tutored individual students 20-30 times before and after school each year. I can provide an online homeschooling experience by getting background information on the student and what his/her goals are. After that, I will have a plan to help your child achieve the grade level or individualized plan expectations.

I’ve attended many phonics workshops, studied different theories on the importance of phonics when teaching children to read. I think it is very important to teach phonics as a tool for children learning to read. However, I believe that sight words (words that are not spelled like they sound), and the whole language approach should be incorporated as well. I have over 9 years experience teaching explicit phonics and phonemic awareness to kindergarten students. My classroom of students consistently achieved higher scores in comparison to their peers in letter naming fluency, letter sound fluency, nonsense word fluency, and cvc consonant-vowel-consonant) reading word fluency.
