Hi, I’m Patty! For over 25 years, I have educated learners across dedicated online tutoring and formal classroom settings. I was honored with a city-wide High School "Ring of Excellence" Teacher of the Year award, marked by a presentation bell, for instructing GED preparation classes.

Across my career, I have logged over 3,000 hours of successful online tutoring, including hundreds of 5-star hours on Wyzant with a 45-minute response time. As an IXL-Certified tutor with a Montessori teaching background, I use a hands-on, student-centered approach. I work with students aged 7 to 70, specializing in those navigating neurodiversity (ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia) or struggling within traditional school systems.

My Approach
Traditional classrooms move quickly, making it easy to get left behind. I focus on bridging those gaps. Whether your child lags in phonics, an older student is stuck on pre-algebra, or you are an adult working toward a GED, I can help. As an IXL-certified educator, I leverage targeted diagnostics to pinpoint skill gaps and assign structured tracks to fast-track progress, offering the patience and encouragement students need to thrive.

What to Expect
I design a unique learning blueprint for each individual, adapting it after every session for maximum efficiency. I can provide custom materials, align with your school's resources, utilize interactive IXL tracking, and assign homework upon request. While I primarily tutor online, I happily meet local students at the Thornhill Library. Note: I maintain a firm 24-hour cancellation policy. Lessons changed with less than 24 hours' notice are billed at the full rate.

As an experienced educator and a parent who successfully homeschooled two children diagnosed with ADHD, I provide specialized academic support tailored to attention regulation and executive functioning challenges. My tutoring practice focuses on students ranging from the elementary grades through adulthood who experience difficulties with sustained focus and engagement. To optimize attention spans, I utilize instructional chunking by varying the pace of each session and transitioning between tasks before cognitive fatigue sets in. For younger learners, I implement gamified learning strategies and interactive exercises to reinforce core skills. For adult GED candidates, I employ dynamic, flexible teaching modalities, continuously assessing comprehension and adapting my approach in real time to ensure deep engagement and cognitive connection.

My expertise in dyslexia remediation and literacy intervention is built on a professional foundation of over 25 years of teaching experience, more than 3,000 hours of successful virtual instruction since 2020, and an active IXL Certification. In my classroom teaching background, my dedication to individualized instruction earned me a city-wide High School 'Ring of Excellence' Teacher of the Year award. I successfully homeschooled my own child with severe dyslexia, which drove me to master and implement structured, multi-sensory reading techniques. My practice serves students ranging from elementary school children building foundational phonics skills to adult GED candidates navigating dyslexia. Utilizing a Montessori framework alongside Orton-Gillingham principles, I specialize in breaking down complex phonetic rules into manageable, explicit steps, integrating visual and kinesthetic modalities to bypass traditional reading barriers and build fluency.

Throughout my career, I have successfully designed individualized reading, phonics, and math interventions that consistently bridge developmental gaps and elevate students to grade-level proficiency. In my practice, I utilize structured multi-sensory techniques to systematically advance learners from foundational phonetic decoding to advanced upper-elementary reading comprehension. My data-driven approach to mathematics focuses on reinforcing number sense and operational fluency. By adapting complex curricula into accessible, manageable milestones, I routinely facilitate rapid academic acceleration, helping students overcome processing delays and achieve measurable long-term success.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Every student learns differently, but every student needs a strong math foundation to succeed. I tutor learners of all levels, from those falling behind to advanced students who need an extra challenge. I locate the missing puzzle pieces in a student’s math background and fill those gaps using fun games, puzzles, and creative approaches. Once we strengthen those core skills, math becomes less frustrating, confidence skyrockets, and students frequently surpass their grade-level goals!

My personalized approach builds core confidence, simplifies complex concepts, and empowers every diverse learner to achieve their unique academic goals.
GED

GED

I specialize in preparing adult learners to pass the GED and HiSET exams, with a heavy emphasis on mathematics, which is my most frequently requested tutoring subject. My deep expertise in the math portion of these tests allows me to confidently break down complex algebraic and geometric concepts into clear, simple steps for struggling students. This targeted approach has resulted in a proud 100% first-time pass rate for every student I have recommended for testing across all exam sections. We always begin with a comprehensive diagnostic assessment to map out your math and core subject knowledge gaps, and I provide strategic homework assignments between sessions to rapidly accelerate your progress toward graduation.
Grammar

Grammar

I make grammar instruction engaging and effective by breaking down complex rules into clear concepts. Using targeted practice and specific examples, I help learners quickly identify errors, build sentence variety, and refine their natural writing flow. Whether you want to master the basics or polish your mechanics, I provide the precise guidance students need to communicate clearly and confidently.
Homeschool

Homeschool

As an experienced educator with over 25 years of teaching experience across various capacities, I provide comprehensive, student-centered academic support tailored to the unique environment of home education. My instructional framework is heavily shaped by my background in Montessori teaching, allowing me to bring a hands-on, individualized approach to students aged 7 to 70 who struggle within the traditional school system. In my homeschool practice, I successfully designed custom curricula to homeschool my own children who navigate ADHD, autism, and specific learning disabilities. I specialize in partnering directly with parents to supplement their chosen home curriculum, integrating multi-sensory techniques to bridge learning gaps for elementary reading and math milestones up through adult GED candidates. By focusing on the whole learner, I create structured, low-stress sessions that turn hard work into authentic confidence and academic success.
Phonics

Phonics

I use a supportive, two-step approach to teach phonics. First, we play engaging games to practice specific sounds and spelling patterns in isolation. This keeps learning fun and prevents students from getting tired. Next, we read actual books right away so students can practice those same skills in context. This quickly improves their reading fluency and confidence. Struggling readers often feel discouraged, so I design my lessons to ensure early success and low frustration. I act as a cheerleader for my students by tracking and celebrating every small victory. This builds their self-belief and helps them love reading.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I specialize in helping students successfully navigate the challenging transition from elementary arithmetic to abstract algebra. Over the past 6 years of tutoring online, I have developed a customized approach that identifies whether a student struggles with abstract concepts or foundational math facts. For students who rely heavily on memorization, I use targeted conceptual exercises to help them understand the logic behind variables and equations. For students who grasp concepts quickly but lack core fact fluency, I integrate quick foundational skill drills into our sessions to build their speed. By tailoring my methods to individual learning styles, I have helped dozens of middle school students close their learning gaps, build lasting confidence, and catch up to their classroom peers.
Reading

Reading

I have over 20 years of experience tutoring both children and adults in foundational literacy, specializing in targeted reading interventions for all age levels. While my early literacy work begins with intensive phonics for rising second graders, I place a strong emphasis on elementary reading comprehension to help young students transition from decoding words to understanding stories. I also possess extensive experience developing advanced reading comprehension skills for middle school students and adult learners preparing for the GED. For the past six years, I have taught primarily online, mastering the digital tools needed to keep lessons interactive and effective. My instructional approach systematically transitions struggling readers from basic phonetic decoding to fluent text tracking. Across all grade levels, I focus heavily on critical thinking, main idea extraction, and vocabulary analysis, giving elementary, middle school, and GED candidates the exact comprehension strategies they need to succeed.
Special Needs

Special Needs

My expertise as a special needs educator is built on a professional foundation of over 25 years of teaching experience, more than 3,000 hours of successful online instruction since 2020, and active IXL Certification. Throughout my career, I have utilized structured, evidence-based modalities to support neurodiverse learners navigating ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and specific learning disabilities. I designed custom curricula to homeschool my own two children who navigate a combination of these diagnoses, giving me deep personal insight into executing highly individualized educational plans. Whether adapting core reading and math concepts for elementary students or breaking down complex testing frameworks for adult GED candidates, I implement multi-sensory techniques, environmental management, and targeted diagnostics to bypass traditional learning barriers and ensure consistent academic success.
Writing

Writing

I have over 20 years of experience tutoring and teaching writing to both children and adults across all skill levels, from elementary school paragraph structuring to advanced academic essays. My educational background and a lifelong passion for the craft of writing allow me to support students effectively, turning overwhelming assignments into manageable milestones. Over the decades, I have successfully worked with diverse learners, including younger students mastering basic essay forms and adults refining their compositional skills or creative projects. My tutoring methodology focuses heavily on equipping students with concrete organizational tools. Rather than simply proofreading or fixing errors for the student, I teach actionable frameworks, outlining strategies, and thesis-building exercises that demystify the writing process. By breaking down complex prompts into clear steps, I help struggling writers overcome writer's block and build structural confidence. My ultimate goal for every session is to foster independent learning, ensuring that each student acquires the editing and compositional skills necessary to succeed on their own long after our lessons conclude.

Patty was excellent. She worked with my daughter on 6th grade Math for the second half of the school year. She was able to considerably increase her math proficiency and confidence during that time. Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Patricia is currently working on 6th Grade Math with my son once a week. He has been able to go from a failing grade to an 85 in a very short time. He was able to pull up his grade after just two sessions on that particular topic. They have been working together since November. My son has always struggled with Math. Patricia picks up quickly on his needs and areas of weakness. Then she breaks it into easy to follow steps, making Math more understandable. I would recommend her to anyone in need of a tutor.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

We highly recommend Miss Patty as she is working with our daughter. She is an amazing tutor who is able to connect to students easily. Before tutoring began, Miss Patty took the time to speak to us (as parents) to discuss and best understand how to tutor our child. When our daughter struggles to understand a certain topic, Miss Patty is extremely patient and will try out different methods to explain the concepts until she understands. As parents, we have a great experience working with Miss Patty and see our child grow in understanding and building confidence in tackling difficult subjects.
