Hi, I'm Patty. I have tutored students aged 7 to 70 for over 3000 hours online since 2020. I have been educating students of all ages for more than 25 years in various capacities. I have a degree in Montessori teaching and a passion for helping people understand and learn.

I am particularly passionate about helping students who have struggled in the educational system. They may be a younger student who is still struggling with phonics or arithmetic when their peers have moved on to more complex topics, an older student who is struggling with writing essays or pre-algebra or an adult who was unable to complete high school and get their diploma. These students often work harder than their peers and yet see less success. They may need extra encouragement and I am happy to give it to them.

Each of these students needs a personalized approach. I put my energy into finding what works for each student. I provide every student of mine with their own unique, individualized learning plan. I then evaluate and adapt the plan as needed after each session so that every tutoring session is on topic for what that student needs. I also provide materials for the students to use at home when appropriate to reinforce the learning or as tools to support their work at school. I can provide practice in the form of homework when requested and appropriate.

I prefer to do my tutoring online. My students appreciate the convenience of being able to be at home and log into a session at a moment's notice and it allows me to have more availability as well. However, I am willing to meet with local students in person at Thornhill Library.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have been trained to tutor teens and adults preparing for high school equivalency exams and have had many years experience tutoring them in a classroom setting. I also have experience tutoring younger teens one on one in algebra and enjoy finding unique strategies to enhance learning and enable success.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have been tutoring students of all levels in math. Some of them are working with me to try and catch up to grade level while others are progressing beyond their peers and needing to stay stimulated and interested. With all of my math students I focus on finding the foundational skills that they are weak in and strengthening those. This is true for both my remedial students as well as advanced. Since all math builds on itself, missing a key skill can really impair progress and understanding. Often "filling in those gaps" can allow a student who was struggling to catch up and even surpass their peers. Depending on the skill and student I may use games, puzzles or unique approaches to help with comprehension and memory.
GED

GED

I particularly enjoy the work I do tutoring students who need a high school equivalency. All of my students that I have encouraged to go and take their test have passed on the first try. I am most experienced in tutoring for the math test (since it is requested the most) but have successfully prepared students for all the subjects. I always start with an assessment so I can provide personalized support for exactly the topics that each students needs help with. I often provide homework assignments between sessions so students can solidify the knowledge that worked on together in our session and progress more rapidly toward their goal of passing the tests.
Phonics

Phonics

Phonics is an essential part of reading skills. With struggling readers early success and minimizing frustration is key. I like to have them practice their skills in context (reading text) as well as practicing skills in isolation (typically we play phonics games to focus on specific skills). Most struggling readers are discouraged and so my job is part cheerleader helping them see their progress and celebrating those improvements along the way,
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

For many students the shift from Elementary Math to algebra is a big challenge. I am here to help them make sense of this new way of looking and math. I spend time learning what each students strengths are and I help them use those strengths to be successful in this new topic. Many students who have great strength in memorizing math facts struggle with understanding algebra. They may not understand why math suddenly became difficult when it was relatively easy before. For others the algebra part is easy but they never go their math facts down and now class is moving too quickly for someone who doesn't have the basics memorized. No matter what the issue I work with the student and help them bridge those gaps and get caught up to their peers in class.
Reading

Reading

I have tutored adults and children in early literacy skills for several years. I have spent the past 2 years tutoring exclusively online with students as young as rising second grade. I a primary focus on phonics for struggling readers that then progresses to fluency skills. I also incorporate reading comprehension as well as grammar skills in the lessons. For young students I make sure to keep the session moving and not linger too long on any one skill to maintain interest and engagement for the entire duration of the session. I also incorporate games and other fun activities to stimulate engagement.
Writing

Writing

I have been tutoring writing in children and adults of all skill levels for several years. I bring my own love of writing to the process and back it up with concrete tools to help struggling writers to organize their work. My goal is always to help writers to gain the tools they need to be able to work independently and be successful.

Excited to meet or exceed my goals with Patty's guidance. Learning is a scary thing depending on your background. The things you believe about yourself can derail your future success. Having a skilled teacher and dedicated mentor has totally changed my opinion on my ability to overcome obstacles.

wonderful tutor

patty has supported me in ways that are hard to put into words. she has been tutoring me for my GED and has helped me grasp concepts that once felt impossible. she explains things clearly and makes them easier to understand, guiding me from the basics of math to more advanced topics. even in a brief conversation, it’s clear that she is a genuinely caring person who truly wants to see you succeed.

Amazing tutor

Patricia is so kind and patient with my daughter. Love that after each lesson she writes what they worked on and how she is can improve. I have already seen a big improvement with her self esteem in math.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Patricia is currently working on 6th Grade Math with my son once a week. He has been able to go from a failing grade to an 85 in a very short time. He was able to pull up his grade after just two sessions on that particular topic. They have been working together since November. My son has always struggled with Math. Patricia picks up quickly on his needs and areas of weakness. Then she breaks it into easy to follow steps, making Math more understandable. I would recommend her to anyone in need of a tutor.

We highly recommend Miss Patty as she is working with our daughter. She is an amazing tutor who is able to connect to students easily. Before tutoring began, Miss Patty took the time to speak to us (as parents) to discuss and best understand how to tutor our child. When our daughter struggles to understand a certain topic, Miss Patty is extremely patient and will try out different methods to explain the concepts until she understands. As parents, we have a great experience working with Miss Patty and see our child grow in understanding and building confidence in tackling difficult subjects.
