Hi! I'm Jacob, a PhD-trained applied physicist who tutors physics, mathematics, scientific computing, and research-oriented projects.

I help with algebra- and calculus-based physics, classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, introductory quantum mechanics, math for physics and engineering, and Python-based scientific computing. My goal is to make the reasoning behind the material clear, not just work through formulas.

I especially enjoy scientific projects, papers, and research. I can help refine experimental ideas, models, data analysis, proposals, and technical writing, and I've reviewed scientific work intended for publication. Projects that combine physics with programming, mathematics, astronomy, or data analysis are particularly welcome.

I also enjoy working with independent learners who want a more individualized course of study. I can help choose topics and literature, develop problems or homework, create computational exercises, and build a structured sequence of lessons around your interests and background.

I'm happy to work with students of different ages and experience levels. Whether you need help with a standard physics course, want to explore an advanced topic in greater depth, or have a scientific project that could benefit from another physicist's perspective, I'd be glad to help.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

With a deep understanding of algebra and its pivotal role in higher-level mathematics, I specialize in helping students master the concepts they need to succeed. Whether you’re looking to “get through” a class or prepare for more challenging subjects, I can guide you through foundational skills and advanced problem-solving techniques. Algebra often becomes much more complex beyond the classroom, and I’m here to ensure you’re equipped to tackle it confidently.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

With a deep understanding of algebra and its pivotal role in higher-level mathematics, I specialize in helping students master the concepts they need to succeed. Whether you’re looking to “get through” a class or prepare for more challenging subjects, I can guide you through foundational skills and advanced problem-solving techniques. Algebra often becomes much more complex beyond the classroom, and I’m here to ensure you’re equipped to tackle it confidently.
Astronomy

Astronomy

With a background in studying slowly rotating neutron stars during my undergraduate research and an intimate understanding of advanced tools like MKIDs used in astronomical research and my published work, I bring a unique perspective to teaching astronomy. My experience bridges theoretical concepts and practical applications, helping students grasp both the beauty and complexity of the universe. Whether you’re learning about stellar evolution, celestial mechanics, or advanced observation techniques, I’m here to guide you with clarity and enthusiasm.
Calculus

Calculus

With experience designing and teaching Calculus I courses, I specialize in making calculus approachable and meaningful for students at all levels. I focus on building a strong foundation in concepts like limits, derivatives, and integrals, while also connecting them to real-world applications. Whether you’re tackling calculus for the first time or refining your skills for advanced studies, I provide personalized guidance to help you understand, apply, and excel.
Physics

Physics

I hold a PhD in applied physics with expertise in Two-Level System Defects and publications featured in prominent physics journals. With experience teaching college-level physics labs and tutoring a range of topics, I specialize in making complex concepts accessible. My research background and practical approach ensure students gain both understanding and confidence in physics.
Python

Python

With years of hands-on experience, I specialize in helping students and professionals get Python code working effectively, even in abstract or challenging settings. I utilized Python extensively in my dissertation, generating figures, running simulations, and exploring tools like Matplotlib, NumPy, and game-creation modules to quickly develop models with insightful results. Whether you’re tackling data visualization, numerical analysis, or creative projects, I’ll help you make Python a tool you rely on—as versatile as a calculator but infinitely more powerful.
Quantum Physics

Quantum Physics

I'm an experimental physicist. My dissertation was successfully defended, its topic being the study of materials and architecture suitable for quantum computing. One of the subjects dealt with installing, interfacing, and characterizing a transmon qubit in an environment previously thought unsuitable for quantum computation.

Infectious interest, clearly proficient

Jacob and I have just started working together to teach me Modern Physics. So far we have been working through Special Relativity, and it has been a total joy. I appreciate the vigor and fascination he brings to all these topics that are clearly well known to him. Even after his years and years of experience he has still got that fire of fascination about these topics. I look forward to many more sessions with him.

Very helpful, patient and professional

Jacob B. helped me with refreshing my skills on algebra equations, Venn diagrams and pattern identification. Would highly recommend him for any math tutoring needs. He explained everything in detail and went over things that I didn’t understand. Great tutor!
