I have taught middle and high school mathematics for 20 years. I have taught every grade level from grade 6 up to AP Statistics. As a teacher, I believe it is important for students to understand why topics work and how they are connected instead of memorizing separate rules. I want the math to make sense. I have taught middle and high school mathematics for 20 years. I have taught every grade level from grade 6 up to AP Statistics. As a teacher, I believe it is important for students to understand why topics work and how they are connected instead of memorizing separate rules. I want the math to make sense. I believe you are more likely to recall mathematics long term if you understand why the math works. Also, I believe that getting better at almost anything requires some practice. So, I will help you learn the math by clarifying topics and guiding you through practice problems.

As a teacher, my students have performed well on standardized tests. My students in AP Statistics averaged 4.19 over three years with a 97% pass rate. Additionally, students in my geometry classes have, on average, increased their percentile ranks by about 5 points compared to all 9th grade students taking the test. I believe I can help any student increase their performance.

Excellent and devoted math tutor

My 16 year old had two sessions a week with Matthew this whole summer in preparation for a difficult test his school required to qualify for an AP course. Matthew squeezed in a lot of material in a short time and explained complex issues simply. My son found him to be an excellent communicator and a kind teacher. I also found Matthew great to work with; when he thought my son needed more time, he suggested increasing sessions from an hour to 1.5 hours. Eventually they met for two hours (there was a LOT of material to cover). My son always seemed to enjoy his lessons and to learn. And (drum roll) he just found out he passed his test! My daughter enjoyed her session with Matthew working on geometry, honors geometry and trig. She liked that he caught on to concepts she needed assistance with and didn’t repeat the same things she has heard in class. My daughter is one of those kids that doesn’t need a whole lot of help - just things to be re-explained more thoroughly so she can have a better understanding. Matthew was the perfect tutor for her - we sent materials in advance and he came organized and explained every point thoroughly - she came out the other end feeling more confident and ready to take on her quiz the next day - which she aced (something that doesn’t happen often). We recommend Matthew also because he is kind and genuinely caring which comes through in the lesson. A highly recommended teacher for all ages.
