About Alexander

Bio

I'm currently a PhD student in the English department at UC Berkeley. I am from Pennsylvania originally, but have lived all over the country (Philadelphia, Boston, NYC, San Francisco). I am very happy to be settling in the East Bay.

I am excited to work with students from the middle school level and up. I have worked with students from Japan, Korea, Brazil, and Austria to all better their mastery of English, and have taught as a full time teacher at both the middle school and high school...

I am excited to work with students from the middle school level and up. I have worked with students from Japan, Korea, Brazil, and Austria to all better their mastery of English, and have taught as a full time teacher at both the middle school and high school levels. I hold a MA in Education from Relay Graduate School of Education in NY and MET from the Charles Sposato Graduate School of Education out of Boston, where I learned to work with students in private and classroom settings. Most of all, I enjoy learning!

I have also tutored ESL at Berklee College of Music and privately around the San Jose area.

Common Core

I have two masters degrees in education (MET from Sposato Graduate School of Education, MAT from Relay Graduate School of Education), and taught middle school level English for three years in NYC. I am very familiar with both the content of common core style curriculum development and execution.
Ear Training

Ear Training

I have a minor in music from the University of Pennsylvania where I studied classical ear training with Jay Reise and James Primosch. I have also studied ear training privately with Caris Liebman, and completed the full course load at Berklee College of Music. I am familiar with both jazz and classical ear training methods.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have been involved in leadership and public speaking since high school, where I attended the National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. I was also a member of the Nominations and Elections Commission at Penn, and the graduate student leadership program at UC Santa Cruz. I have also tutored 9th grade students in a full year curriculum in Speech and Composition at Match charter high school. These experiences, combined with my professional experience as a musician, qualify me to be a public speaking tutor.
Saxophone

Saxophone

I have a minor in music from the University of Pennsylvania, and attended Berklee College of Music for Saxophone Jazz Performance between 2010 and 2011. I have studied jazz performance with Dave Liebman, Hal Crook, Larry McKenna, and Shannon LeClaire. Up until today, I have worked professionally as a saxophonist in several small and large bands, including the Beantown Swing Orchestra. I also have experience teaching music to middle and high school students, both through the Penn Music Mentors program in West Philadelphia and to students at the Boston Community Leadership Academy in Brighton, MA.
Soccer

Soccer

I have played at the high school, olympic development program regional 1, and the college levels. I have also coached middle school soccer for three years as the head coach at Achievement Firs Bushwick Middle School in Brooklyn. I work well with individual students and team training methods.

He has my highest recommendation.

Alexander is a wonderful tutor. He has a relaxed, easy going manner that quickly puts the student at ease. He spent a couple hours with my son working with him on essay writing skills. My son felt that Alexander really helped him and he has asked if he can work with Alexander some more. I had hoped we could get another hour in before a big writing assignment, but it was the holidays, and Alexander was headed out of town, even so, when Alexander learned his flight was delayed, he offered to fill that bit of time, helping my son. That is really going above and beyond!
