Bio

Growing up, I've achieved significant success in individual- and team-based competitions such as MathCounts, the AMC/AIME, and ARML. I've gotten perfect scores on both the SAT and ACT Math sections. I mastered AP Calculus BC as a 9th grader, took multivariable calculus/linear algebra in 10th grade, and went on to take courses in probability, discrete math, combinatorics, and number theory in university.

But an exceptional math tutor blends extensive experience, mastery of the material, and sharp problem-solving skills with an ability to convey knowledge to the student in several understandable and illuminating ways, and this is my real area of expertise. I have been helping classmates and friends in their studies for as long as I can remember. I believe in guiding students to understand the material themselves to make more meaningful learning connections, but am well-equipped and patient to break down and explain complex concepts as well. I can tailor my teaching style to the learning needs of the student: I can adjust the pace, how serious or fun the lesson is, and the balance between my explaining concepts and my encouraging the student to excel on his or her own.

I've accumulated over 2000 hours of in-person/online tutoring with hundreds of students over the past 10+ years. I've personally guided my peers through college-level courses in numerous subjects, and personally tutored several students online to score in the 700-800 range on the SAT Math section, boasting score increases of over 100 points.

In addition to this, I strive to connect with my students, establishing a friendly, comfortable partnership and adjusting to each student's unique traits, abilities, and preferences. My students have ranged in age from 6 to 60, and each one's approach to thinking has been wonderfully unique. No matter if you are falling behind and struggling or very advanced and looking for even more of a competitive edge, I will be able to meet you where you're at and give you something meaningful to take away.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I received a perfect score on the ACT Math section when I took the test many moons ago. With my competition math background, I am very familiar with all the topics on the ACT Math test and will be able to explain them from multiple perspectives. In addition, I am happy to offer tips and tricks to improve speed and accuracy on standardized tests like the ACT.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Due to my competition math background, I mastered Algebra I in 6th grade. I have tutored numerous students at all levels in Algebra, and will be able to help in explaining and illuminating topics in Algebra in several different ways. With my expertise in Algebra II and math for standardized testing, I will also be able to help point out which concepts and techniques will be particularly crucial in the student's journey towards high school math.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Due to my background in competition math from a young age, I mastered Algebra II in 8th grade. I have many hours of experience tutoring high school-aged students in a multitude of Algebra II topics, including functions, polynomials, and conic sections.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

As a seventh grader, I achieved a perfect score on the AMC 8 -- the only student in my middle school to do so. I have qualified for the AIME by taking the AMC 10 and the AMC 12. To ensure that my skills are still fresh and up-to-date, I have been going through AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME questions. On my most recent timed attempt at an AIME, I scored in the top 2%.
Calculus

Calculus

I received a 5 on the AP Calculus BC test when I was in 9th grade, but I know from experience that Calculus doesn't always come easy. Actually, revisiting Calculus for a second time as a tutor has allowed me to see topics and concepts in Calculus with an even greater clarity, which I am now eager to pass on to my students.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

My computer programming journey began in middle school when I self-learned the basics of programming by creating an interactive game on a graphing calculator with my friends. I graduated from UC San Diego with a B.S. in Computer Science in 2017, gaining experience with many programming languages and other concepts such as discrete math, data structures, and algorithms. Nowadays, I am a Python LeetCode enthusiast that's happy to help you debug your code!

Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete math is one of my favorite subjects to teach because of its role as a bridge between computer science and mathematics. I've taken discrete math and graph theory courses in university, but what really lit a flame in me for this topic is doing competition math on topics such as probability and combinatorics. With my extensive background in both computer science and mathematics, I'll be sure to fill in your knowledge gaps and also demonstrate how the two subjects are linked together by discrete math.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I was in advanced mathematics throughout my entire time in elementary school, having mastered the basics of arithmetic quite early. Some of my early feats include doing 100 arithmetic problems in under 90 seconds for addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Numbers have always resonated with me in a way that nothing else could, and now I am happy to pass a little of that passion on to the next generation.
Geometry

Geometry

Due to my background in competition math, I completed high school Geometry in 7th grade. Going further into Olympiad-level geometry has allowed me to see the concepts in regular high school Geometry with an even greater clarity and I am eager to help students see the beauty behind the scenes of geometry. But I fully acknowledge that Geometry can be a topic that stumbles many students. I am well-equipped and able to encourage struggling students and enlighten advanced students alike.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I was in advanced math for the entirety of my time as an elementary school student, leading me to acquire very strong Pre-Algebra fundamentals by a young age. I excelled at state-level Math League competitions that were designed to be solved with only Pre-Algebra-level techniques. In addition, as an experienced tutor in Algebra, Algebra II, and standardized testing, I will be able to teach Pre-Algebra topics with the student's future mathematical journey in mind.
Probability

Probability

Probability is probably one of my favorite topics to work on and teach. Due to my competition math background, I have an extensive knowledge and understanding of all sorts of different topics and concepts in probability. Probability was actually one of my biggest strengths in competition math, so the chances are good that you're in good hands.
SAT Math

SAT Math

With the recent advent of the Digital SAT, the Math section of the SAT has grown to resemble competition math more and more. My competition math background and experience with the SAT (I scored an 800 on my SAT way back in the day and am confident I would be able to do so now with plenty of time to spare) give me the ideal skillset to help students prepare for the SAT. With numerous hours of experience tutoring students for the SAT and proven results (many of my students have scored 700+ on the Math section with score improvements as large as 120 points), I am well-equipped with both mathematical knowledge and extra skills and tips to boost both speed and accuracy.
