Hi there! Trying to make sense of economics, public policy, quant methods, or GIS? While challenging, seeing these subjects click is incredibly satisfying. I'm here to help you get there.

My academic journey equipped me with advanced tools. It started with a Bachelor's in Economics at UNC Chapel Hill (including insightful summer study at LSE) and culminated in a Georgia Tech Ph.D. in Economics specializing in international trade, network theory, and cutting-edge geospatial economics. Master's degrees in Economics (GT, IU), Public Policy (BSE), and GIS&T (GT) provide deep, interdisciplinary expertise.

For over 10 years, I've worked with learners at all levels – high school, college, grad school, even professionals wanting to enhance their skills. As a Georgia Tech instructor and CETL Teaching Fellow, I focused on improving learning effectiveness, especially online (drawing on experience with Duke Fuqua, Campus.edu). Honestly, seeing that lightbulb go on for a student is still the best part.

My path wasn't smooth; transitioning from homeschool to college required teaching myself how to learn effectively. It taught me everyone learns differently, so my focus is finding what works for you.

I enjoy working with diverse learners on their path. I can help you master coursework in Econ, Policy, Stats, or GIS. But I particularly enjoy guiding research: brainstorming ideas, planning studies, structuring a thesis, or mastering the needed quantitative/geospatial tools.

My goal? Build your understanding, critical thinking, and confidence. If you're ready to dig in and achieve your goals, let's connect!

Data Science

I offer a unique interdisciplinary approach to data science tutoring, drawing on my expertise in economics, geographic information systems, and cognitive science. My Ph.D. and M.S. degrees, coupled with extensive teaching experience, equip me to guide students through complex data challenges. I focus on fostering problem-solving skills and helping students connect data science techniques to diverse fields, from economics and policy to spatial analysis and beyond.
Econometrics

Econometrics

I’ve studied, taught, and actively worked on econometric research for over ten years. Over time, I’ve worked extensively with applied microeconometrics and research design methodologies, panel data, time series research, and spatial econometrics. As a teacher, I’ve taught courses in business and applied econometrics as well, including one semester of PhD level panel data econometrics.

I bring expertise in both geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), offering a unique perspective. My M.S. in GIS&T and years of teaching experience equip me to help you master concepts and skills. I tailor my approach to your individual learning needs.
GIS

GIS

I have more than 5 years of applied experience with GIS, including designing large scale research and analytics projects. I’m proficient in ArcGIS Pro and have ample experience with other platforms, including QGIS, GRASS & GDAL with Python front-ends, ERDAS IMAGINE from Hexagon Geospatial, and city planning-based data mining methods with Google Earth Engine and Overpass Turbo API for OSM data. My specialities include remote sensing analysis with multispectral and hyperspectral data filtering for environmental and socioeconomic analysis, disaster analysis modeling, and research-based GIS techniques.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have more than 10 years of experience in advanced quantitative research, including econometrics and policy analysis, which rely heavily on linear algebra. Additionally, I’ve taught economics, econometrics, and engineering courses involving linear algebra at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Indiana University—Bloomington.
Macroeconomics

Macroeconomics

I have a Ph.D. In economics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where I’ve taught macroeconomics for multiple semesters. My work in international trade theory and public policy involve advanced macroeconomic modeling, including dynamic programming and factor models, growth models, and detailed analysis of monetary and fiscal policy responses to economic and political shocks. I also have two additional masters degrees in economics (Georgia Tech and Indiana University—Bloomington), as well as a masters in public policy from the Barcelona School of Economics.
Martial Arts

Martial Arts

I've been incredibly fortunate to have spent 12+ years immersed in the world of martial arts, starting at a young age and dedicating myself to consistent training. While I've had the honor of achieving black belts in multiple disciplines, including Sin Moo Hapkido, TaeKwonDo, and Shotokan Karate, and even enjoyed some success in tournaments, I truly believe the greatest rewards have been the personal growth and discipline that have come through practice and instruction. My main focus now is to gently share the knowledge and skills I've been so lucky to learn, hopefully helping others discover their own strength and capabilities through martial arts. I am particularly adept at teaching mental control; the use and mastery of joint manipulation, body control, and movement methods from HapKiDo; as well as improvisational situation-specific self defense techniques.

Knowledgable and adaptive tutor

Ian was incredibly patient and went through all the material from a logical standpoint which I asked for. He also connected it to really interesting theories, and real life ideas that helped me continue to see the beauty in macroeconomics and have fun with the challenge in problems.

Best Economics Tutor We've Found – Highly Recommend!

Ian has been phenomenal in helping my 17-year-old son with his honors economics class. We've tried several tutors, but Ian stood out by explaining complex concepts in clear, simple terms that really resonated. My son mentioned multiple times that Ian makes economics easy to grasp, which has dramatically boosted his understanding and confidence. If you're looking for someone who can break down difficult economic topics effortlessly, Ian is your tutor!

Unit 1 AP Microeconomics

We have been reviewing material from Unit 1 in preparation for the AP Microeconomics test in May and reteaching material from an extended classroom teacher's absence. So far, the lessons have been going really well and my daughter is getting more and more confident in her understanding of concepts.
