About Shawn

Bio

Hello and Ni Hao, I'm Shawn and I've been an active coach, teacher, and tutor since 1996. My B.A is from the University of Colorado at Boulder, I have a master’s in International Affairs from Washington University in Saint Louis, and I’m fluent in Mandarin Chinese. I’ve led the creation of more than 200 courses (80% adult education and 20% university education) and have several thousand hours of teaching and tutoring experience.

Hello and Ni Hao, I'm Shawn and I've been an active coach, teacher, and tutor since 1996. My B.A is from the University of Colorado at Boulder, I have a master’s in International Affairs from Washington University in Saint Louis, and I’m fluent in Mandarin Chinese. I’ve led the creation of more than 200 courses (80% adult education and 20% university education) and have several thousand hours of teaching and tutoring experience.
I support three age groups as a tutor: High School Students, University Students, and Adult Learners. I support all these learners with ESL, basic Mandarin Chinese, writing, and test preparation (has included in the past general test prep, ACT, SSAT, TOEFL, and the FINRA Series licenses). For my university and adult learners, I also offer business course focused tutoring, all things related to international affairs (political science, micro and macro econ, etc.), social sciences; as well as anything related to culture or culture change.

My focus when working with learners new to me is quickly matching their learning style with their learning needs. Once we’ve identified your best learning styles, I connect the concepts and ideas you’re learning with your existing experiences to help contextualize the subject in your terms and goals.

And my undergraduate program at the University of Colorado you had to take one class on philosophy and then for my specific major. I took another class on comparative philosophy, comparing Western with Japanese and Chinese philosophy. Then for my masters degree at Washington University, I took another comparative philosophy class with more of a sociological and anthropological perspective.

I've been managing projects over all sizes since 1999. First project ever was a several million clean room project for PortaFab Corporation (we supplied all the components for the clean room fabrication). Most recently ran a culture project as a consultant for Northwestern Mutual impacting all 20,000 plus field representatives.

I have taught six university courses, including several at the graduate level. I additionally taught dozens of business courses as well as was a management consultant for four years.

I’ve also taught at Washington University, University of Missouri St. Louis, Saint Louis University and Harris Stowe University,. Additionally, I’ve taught professional and business writing standards and techniques for continuing education credit through multiple business organizations.

the best S65 tutor!

Shawn is truly a master when it comes to breaking down the topics of the S65. I came to Shawn after having tried another tutor outside of Wyzant and failing my exam the first time around. After meeting with Shawn consistently, I felt like I had a better handle of the exam topics and felt more confident the second time around taking my exam.
