I’ve been teaching, tutoring, and helping people understand things for over 25 years. I have a Masters in Math, and a Ph.D. in STEM education. I’ve been teaching, tutoring, and helping people understand things for over 25 years. I have a Masters in Math, and a Ph.D. in STEM education. I’ve worked as a TA in both math and education courses at three universities. Most of my experience is at the college level, but I’ve had good success with high school students as well. I hope you believe me when I tell you that I know what it’s like to not understand something, to not be able to do your homework. Self-doubt, anxiety, and the idea that ‘I’m the only one’ or that ‘I’m stupid for not getting this’ creep in. That’s when learning stops. Therefore, I try to tailor each tutoring session to your needs. Whether you’re properly freaked out, or just want to talk to a different person about it, that’s fine. From wanting to understand the material at a deeper level or just needing to get through a class, I can help with that. No judgments here.
For mathematics, I try to help you see some relevance to what you’re studying—it helps! Even if we see it as an exercise to train your brain to do some complicated, abstract thinking, that’s worthwhile as well. I like to keep sessions relaxed and as discovery oriented as we can. That is, helping you figure it out; that way you remember it better. You may get more questions out of me than answers, but don’t worry. I do know that somethings the best thing to do is to show you how to do it. I can help with high school and college level math up to calculus.
One area of focus for me in grad school was argumentation. For writing assignments, I will help you find what it is that you want to say, and then put together evidence in order to support your claims in a clear, precise manner. Before a session, I’m willing to get myself in the ballpark of what you’re writing about, but any detailed analysis and/or editing will happen during the session. In short, I can help you form a coherent and understandable argument. I won’t necessarily be an expert in your subject. That’s your job. ;)
