If your student is struggling in Algebra, they are not alone. I am a public school mathematics teacher with more than 11 years of classroom experience teaching Algebra 1 and Geometry. Over the years I have also taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math, which has given me a strong understanding of how mathematical ideas build on one another. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Education as well as an MBA, and I work with students every day who are trying to make sense of the transition into Algebra.
My tutoring approach focuses on helping students truly understand the structure behind the mathematics rather than simply memorizing formulas. For example, students often forget the formula for the area of a triangle, but when they see that a triangle is simply half of a rectangle with the same base and height, the formula becomes intuitive. Helping students see these connections allows them to build confidence and develop a deeper understanding of the material.
Many students who struggle in Algebra are actually dealing with earlier gaps in foundational skills such as multiplication, fractions, or integer operations. Because I have taught across several grade levels, I am often able to identify these underlying issues and help students rebuild the foundations they need for Algebra to make sense. My goal in tutoring is not only to help students complete assignments, but to help them experience the small breakthroughs that make mathematics feel understandable and achievable.
