Hello! My name is Jonah, and I am a Missouri-certified high school science teacher with six years of classroom teaching experience. I hold two bachelor's degrees, one in Physics and one in Linguistics, an MA and PhD in Linguistics, and an Education Specialist degree in K–12 Educational Leadership. Throughout my career, I have taught and mentored students with a wide range of academic backgrounds, learning styles, and goals.

I currently teach high school science courses including Biology and Zoology (and have previously taught Earth Science, Intro to Health Studies, and Forensic Science), and have served for years as both Science Dept chair and STEM Academy Leader of my school. I have extensive experience helping students strengthen their skills in mathematics, scientific reasoning, reading, and test preparation. In addition to classroom teaching, I frequently work one-on-one with students who needed extra support, enrichment, or preparation for major exams. My educational background allows me to combine strong content knowledge with practical teaching strategies that help students understand difficult concepts and build confidence.

My approach to tutoring focuses on identifying the specific obstacles preventing a student from succeeding and then developing a personalized plan to address them. I believe students learn best when they understand not only the correct answer, but also the reasoning behind it. Whether we are working on Algebra, Biology, ACT Math, ACT Science, or other academic subjects, I emphasize clear explanations, problem-solving strategies, and skills that students can continue using independently.

I enjoy helping students achieve their goals, whether that means improving classroom grades, preparing for an important exam, building confidence in a challenging subject, or reaching ambitious college admissions targets. I look forward to helping each student develop both the knowledge and the confidence needed for long-term success.

Approved Subjects

Anthropology

Anthropology

I completed a PhD in Linguistics, during which I was trained in cultural and linguistic anthropological techniques involved in field work related to interaction with language communities in a variety of different circumstances; archeology, cross-cultural/cross-linguistic comparison, and time-deep reconstruction (which I utilized as a historical linguist); and physical anthropology involved in questions of human evolution and the role and evolution of speech and language as it relates to the evolution and the past and present diversity of other human/hominid physiological, anatomical, neurological, and psychological faculties. I combined this knowledge, plus correspondence with experts from major universities, to help design a college-ready Anthropology unit to my high school Zoology course that utilizes hands-on labs involving in-depth measurement and comparative analysis of a diverse set of anatomically accurate resin and 3D printed hominid crania, in support of which I was awarded over $5000 in competitive grants.
Earth Science

Earth Science

I have taught Earth Science to High School students for years. In addition, I have a bachelor's degree in Physics with both core courses and electives devoted to the main parts of Earth Science. These include Geology, Meteorology, Climatology, and Astronomy. My college background in these subjects was beneficial during the years in which I also served on the my school district team for curriculum writing and development for Earth Science.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I completed a PhD in Linguistics, during which I wrote and was evaluated on thousands of pages of my own essay-format writing. I received training as a Teaching Assistant and then an independent Instructor of record in coaching and evaluating essays. This training was utilized during my university-level teaching and then reinforced during the last 6 years of high school teaching, where I assigned, graded, and created curriculum to teach and reinforce good essay-writing skills.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I completed a PhD in Linguistics in 2020 from the University of Kansas. During the course of that degree, I received full financial support through a teaching fellowship, which included being both a Teaching Assistant to multiple professors in the department across many linguistic subfields as well as eventually becoming Instructor of record, managing and teaching classes on my own. I was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award by the KU Linguistics Department and during my final year, the Frances Ingemann Linguistic Achievement Award.
Zoology

Zoology

Beyond college credits in this area, I have five years of experience teaching Zoology and developing district-wide Zoology curriculum. This includes the following core subjects: Principles of Evolution and the History of Animal Life, Taxonomy & Cladistics (naming, identifying, and classifying animals by evolutionary relationship), Anatomy & Physiology (studying internal structures and biological functions of animal bodies through observation and dissection), and Ecology (animal behavior and interactions with one another and their environment). For the past five years, I have taught Zoology on the high school level with the goal of college scientific readiness. Between school years, I serve on the curriculum development and writing team, which has included communication with professors from Duke University and other leading national programs. During this time, I have been awarded two grants (The NEA Foundation Student Success Grant and the Harry S. Truman Memorial Scholarship, together totaling $5736) recognizing and supporting my work in the development of rigorous Zoology capstone labs that utilize diverse high-quality anatomically accurate models for measurement and analysis.
