About Alan

I can teach anyone to be a programmer and make complex subjects simple to understand.

I am an experienced programming instructor and software developer. I have taught students from elementary school to adults. I am able to teach the concepts related to programming using various computer languages.

My college education focused on teaching and librarianship. I lived in South Korea for a year and taught English in private and public schools. I know how to teach and to work with students to achieve their goals. I am patient and I do not like to rush students.

I modify my teaching style to fit my student's needs. I prefer to visually show how to do a task or provide the right tools and let the student take over. I don't mind answering quick questions and prefer to respond quickly to student inquiries.

I primarily teach online lessons. I am also available in Columbia, Missouri for in-person sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASP.NET

I have coached students on using a variety of web development frameworks using C#. ASP.net webforms being one of those while MVC and single page applications and web api are becoming more popular there are many applications in businesses with ASP.net still in use. I am able to help illuminate on the challenges of adding new features to these projects.

C#

I use C# as part of my day job. C# is a great compiled language with a big focus on object oriented programming. It does have support for functional and asynchronous programming. I use it daily as part of working in a WISC stack (Windows/IIS/SQL/C#) company.

HTML

I utilize html. I am familiar with designing webpages composed of many different html tags in a variety of styles and formats. It is highly valuable for web development.

Linux

I have familiarity with using various distributions of Linux. Primarily I would be able to explain how to setup and use various software or create a webserver with necessary security precautions. I use Centos daily as part of my job to verify a smooth running service.

Great tutor who is well prepared

It has been difficult for me to find a Computer Programming tutor who understands iOS programming and can explain it thoroughly. Finding Alan was a relief! During my lesson with Alan, he walked me through the basics but allowed me to try and figure out what was going on in a controlled environment. He was very prepared and created a whole lesson beforehand. I highly recommend him.
