This section is about me and my background, but since it is about tutoring, the first thing that needs to be said is that learning is about YOU, the learner. It is up to your teachers to help YOU so that you get where you need to be.

I have taught students of various ages in a variety of subject areas beginning with my own six children who home schooled through high school. I have tutored neighbor children, foster children, grandchildren, etc. Adult students have included EMT and nursing students, midwives, doctors and college students who needed a hand.

I am a doctor and a midwife with undergraduate degrees in biology, chemistry and nursing. I write about a variety of topics and I have designed both coursework and examinations for many situations.

Each person, whatever their age, has a unique way of learning. I work with students individually even when I have groups of them because I believe that the relationship and chance to interact provide an important part of the learning experience particularly when the subject matter is difficult for the learner. Patience and discussion turn up lots of things as with the girl who was having trouble converting fractions to decimals. It was very apparent why when I realized that she was not sure how to do the long division and multiplication steps. We backed up and got it all in order in one session.

Each student deserves a thorough, gently structured education based on respect for his/her goals and approach to learning. I see a large part of my job to be knowing something about what the depth and breadth of the subject matter at hand can be so I can help the student find a place in it to start to understand and learn. I want change to occur that will stay with them so that they can use it both to make this class assignment stick for the test next week, and five years from now when it relates to something else they run across.

Whether you have a short term need to survive a particular subject, or a more involved tutoring situation, lets talk and see what we c

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

Reading comprehension, the rules of the English language, and reasoning abilities based on these are content areas that I find easy and fun to teach! I have coached adult learners to success in these areas!
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

Test preparation is a special area of tutoring and one which I am happy to do. I have tutored many students for the ACT Reading test, and others for general test preparation.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have taught a number of home school students through high school graduation, and I tutored quite a few others in this level of algebra, both in high school and college. My own background includes degrees in chemistry and biology, so I studied math considerably beyond this, and I actually enjoy helping students figure it out.
Anatomy

Anatomy

My qualifications to tutor anatomy come from my background in the health sciences (nursing, midwifery, and medicine) and in biology. On the way through all that education I have, of course, taken a variety of anatomy classes at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and I have taught aspects of anatomy to students in a variety of health sciences fields. I also recall making quite a hit with guest appearances in the classes of various children and grandchildren.
Biology

Biology

I am a retired physician. One of my undergraduate majors was in biology. I have taught a number of students biology and related subjects.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have tutored students at all levels of elementary and secondary math from very early beginning students on. I particularly like the middle school ages when students begin to have a lot to say and can formulate questions and challenges. I have worked in private school settings, and with a variety of home school students.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I have taught students of this age science both in home school and in private school settings, individually and in groups. I can adapt the approach to the needs of the student depending upon the work being undertaken in the school and the student's own interests, as well as on whether there are lab skills needed for the class. And I think that it is all wonderful fun which does not hurt a thing when a student is thinking they are having difficulty.
English

English

My experience in teaching English includes students of all ages and grade levels from very young beginning readers and writers to a number of high school and college students. I have worked with students who were preparing for various English examinations and students for whom English was a second language. I have also lived in another country where I had the experience of finding myself in the position of being the one trying to function in a new language!
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with a number of adult learners for whom English was a second language. I have also lived in an area of the world where both the common language and the language of work were new to me and experienced what that was like!
GED

GED

Degree in biology and chemistry, so the science and math components of the test are not a problem. I have been a home-school teacher for many years with my six and some others. They have all graduated well prepared. I have a wide variety of experience teaching adult learners as well, including GED students, and various college level courses.
Pharmacology

Pharmacology

I have degrees in both nursing and medicine and have, therefore, been a student in several pharmacology classes myself. I have been required to both stay current in there areas and teach in them over the years.
Physiology

Physiology

I teach anatomy and physiology at the junior college level. I have experience tutoring these subjects with high school and college students. I have, of course, taken these subjects and had to maintain knowledge of them with my past work in healthcare professions.
Piano

Prealgebra

I have taught home school students through high school, so this is familiar content. I have degrees in biology and chemistry, myself, so have studied enough math to have a good grasp of this material!

I have taught these subjects in private school settings, and to home school students. These have included my own six, several grandchildren, and a number of other home schooled students from whom I have served as teacher. I have supervised a number of independent readings courses and projects in the social studies fields.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have probably done as much successful studying as anyone alive if you stop and consider for a moment all of the time I have spent as a student, a teacher, or a professional in fields requiring ongoing preparation. I have coached others in a variety of settings as they prepared for large examinations. I have taught students of all ages from young childhood through college and helped them organize their thinking about how to study the material we with which we were involved. I have written and administered examinations which allowed me the opportunity to study the process of studying!
TEAS

TEAS

I have taught adult learners and people preparing for examinations extensively. This exam, in particular, is used extensively with people entering fields such as nursing, in which I, myself have a degree. This exam emphasizes reading comprehension, an area of great importance for students at all levels, and especially those entering the very reading intensive professional education degrees. Many of the classes that I have helped teach to health professionals contained training content applicable to helping adult learners learn and retain material.
TOEFL

TOEFL

I have assisted several students with the study of English in preparation for the TOEFL examination, and I have taught English as a foreign language to students of various ages. I have also had the experience of living and working in another country in a language that was new to me which, I think, gives me some insight into the problems involved.
