I am currently a PhD student in English at the University of Missouri, where my work focuses on writing, literacy, and storytelling. Before beginning my doctoral program, I earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Georgia State University and an MA in English from Ball State University. Across these institutions, I taught university-level writing and literature courses, including English Composition, Creative Writing, and African American Literature. My years in the classroom have shaped a teaching style grounded in patience, clarity, and meeting each student exactly where they are.
Alongside my academic teaching, I have extensive experience as a freelance writing tutor and editor, working with students of all ages—from early elementary readers developing foundational phonics skills to middle and high school students learning to analyze literature, construct arguments, and write with confidence. In my freelance work, I’ve helped students improve reading comprehension, strengthen grammar and vocabulary, and build the critical thinking skills necessary for strong academic performance.
My approach is highly adaptable: for younger learners, I emphasize phonics, fluency, reading confidence, and structured support that makes English both fun and accessible. For middle-school students, I focus on the fundamentals of writing, close reading, sentence-level clarity, and growing a student’s ability to think independently about texts. For older students, I bring in more advanced skills such as organization, analytical writing, and revision strategies. No matter the age, my goal is always the same—to create an encouraging, student-centered environment where learners feel supported, capable, and proud of their progress.
Whether your student needs help sounding out words, tackling a novel, improving writing skills, or preparing for more rigorous coursework, I bring years of professional teaching, tutoring, and editing experience to guide them forward with care and expertise.
