Bio

I have been teaching and tutoring since 2018, focusing on biology and ACT/SAT test prep, but I have a wide variety of skills and experience and can teach K-12 lessons in math, English, history, physical science, and general study skills.

I worked as a teaching assistant for an introductory biology course at North Carolina State University from 2020-2022, lecturing and leading lab sections. From 2018-2019, I worked as a one-on-one K-12 tutor at the Huntington Learning Center in Broomfield,...

I worked as a teaching assistant for an introductory biology course at North Carolina State University from 2020-2022, lecturing and leading lab sections. From 2018-2019, I worked as a one-on-one K-12 tutor at the Huntington Learning Center in Broomfield, CO, and In 2022, I worked as a K-12 tutor for Club Z! Tutoring and Grade Potential Tutoring in Raleigh, NC. I have a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Geology from Washington University in St. Louis with a minor in Archaeology, and I recently completed my Master's of Science in Biology at North Carolina State University. My academic experience is largely focused on the natural sciences, but I am also a capable writer and I have a solid foundation in the humanities.

My past students have ranged in age from kindergarten to adult, with most of my experience centered around high school and college students. I have experience teaching students with both physical and learning disabilities, including blindness, autism, and ADHD. I have taught in the classroom, one-on-one, online synchronous, and online asynchronous contexts, and am equally comfortable across all of these formats. My teaching approach adapts to the needs of the student. Some students prefer lesson reviews where I explain a concept with examples or visuals and the student can ask follow-up questions. Other students prefer practice problems with the guided review. Often, I like to incorporate a variety of approaches to see what the student responds to best. My goal is to provide a judgment-free environment where I can help students achieve their goals and feel confident in their own abilities moving forward.

ADHD

ADHD

I have worked with hundreds of students over my four years of teaching and tutoring, dozens of whom were diagnosed ADHD and dozens more of whom experience its symptoms. People with ADHD often experience sensory over- or under-stimulation, which in school can result in a student struggling to pay attention and retain important information. In my experience, students struggling with focus often benefit from having another person in the room they can talk to about the material to better engage with it, and who can gently course-correct if they start to veer off-task. My approach for students struggling with ADHD symptoms in school is to work one-on-one with them to determine where their specific challenges lie, and help them explore tools and strategies for approaching these challenges. These can include accessibility tools such as text readers and alarms, as well as different techniques for notetaking, planning, completing long projects, or studying for tests.
Anthropology

Anthropology

I received a minor in archaeology as part of my undergraduate geology degree, which entailed coursework and research on archaeological sites in Eastern Africa and Australia. I completed anthropology courses from Washington University in St. Louis, including those related to cultural anthropology, human physiology and evolution, and archaeology. Anthropology covers topics related to humans and our societies, and as such, involves studying the tremendous diversity of human life, both in the present and throughout history. There are four main branches in anthropology: the sociocultural branch concerns human cultures and group organization; the biological branch concerns the biology and evolution of humans, as well as our primate relatives; the archaeological branch concerns using remains to understand human societies and history; and the linguistic branch concerns human language and communication, specifically in how they relate to human societies and cultures. My background is predominantly in the biological and archaeological branches of anthropology, but I am familiar with the other two through coursework and personal interest.
Archaeology

Archaeology

I received a minor in archaeology as part of my undergraduate geology degree, which entailed coursework and research on archaeological sites in Eastern Africa and Australia. I completed anthropology and archaeology courses from Washington University in St. Louis related to archaeological study as it pertains to human history, museum studies, and the human species from an anthropological point of view. I have participated in two combined paleontology-archaeology digs that involved common excavation equipment and techniques, and I have encountered archaeological artifacts and potential future sites during my paleontological field work. Recognizing and navigating these sites without disturbing them requires knowledge of State and Federal laws regarding archaeological material, as well as familiarity with the archaeological history of the United States. While my career has leaned more toward biology and laboratory science in recent years, I maintain a personal interest in history, particularly from an archaeological perspective, and regularly read articles and research journals reporting about new finds worldwide.
Geology

Geology

I have a background in geology and paleontology, with a Bachelor’s in Geology from Washington University in St. Louis and a Master’s in Biology focused on paleontological research from North Carolina State University. I have over three years of full-time work experience in geological, paleontological, and environmental science laboratories and am well-acquainted with the fundamentals of the natural sciences.
