I have eight years of online tutoring experience working with students from elementary school through graduate-level coursework, including many adults returning to school after time away. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Southeast Missouri State University and completed graduate coursework in political philosophy at Western Michigan University. My strongest subject areas are political science, history, and comparative government, and I also have extensive tutoring experience in U.S. and world history, government and civics, geography, international relations, political philosophy, and social studies. I also work with students on research, academic assignments, test preparation, and the practical skills needed to succeed in school.
My tutoring approach is collaborative rather than lecture-based. I often use Socratic questioning to help students reason their way through difficult material, and I connect abstract ideas to historical and contemporary examples so that concepts become easier to understand. When a topic feels overwhelming, I break it into smaller pieces and work through it step by step. My goal is not simply to help a student arrive at the correct answer, but to help them understand why the answer makes sense and become increasingly confident working independently.
I also enjoy helping students develop stronger research and analytical skills. We may look at who created a source, its intended audience, possible bias, the quality of its evidence and citations, and how competing perspectives can be evaluated fairly. I provide content-focused feedback on papers, arguments, discussion posts, and other assignments, and I help students interpret prompts and prepare for exams. For adult learners in particular, I also provide support with time management, student success, and balancing school with work and other responsibilities.
