About William

Bio

I lead data services at a community bank, where I spend my days in SQL, Excel, Power BI, SSRS, and SSIS.

Over seven years I have built the bank's data warehouse, its daily data pipelines, and the dashboards and reports that executives, lenders and finance staff rely on. I earned my degree in Data Science, with a minor in Finance, from Winona State University in 2019, and in 2025 I became a Certified Community Bank Data Analyst through the ICBA.

Most of my career has been spent working alongside people who are not data specialists: loan officers, accountants, operations staff and executives. Turning a business question into a query, then explaining the answer so it makes sense to someone outside the data team, is a big part of my job, and it is exactly the skill tutoring needs. I also run The Data Science Tutor, a YouTube channel and website where I teach practical data skills through video lessons built around a realistic practice company, Bean There Coffee Co.

My lessons are one-on-one and built around your goal, whether that is a college statistics or data course, a SQL or Excel assignment, preparing for a data analyst interview, or finally getting control of a spreadsheet at work. I start by finding out what you already know, then we work through real problems together while you do the typing, because that is how the skill sticks. I explain the reasoning behind each step so you can solve the next problem without me, and I share practice files so you can keep improving between sessions.

I work best with college students and adult learners, and I am especially patient with beginners who feel behind.

Data Analysis

Data Analysis

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Data Science with a minor in Finance from Winona State University, graduating in 2019. I have worked professionally in data analytics since 2020 and currently serve as Vice President of Data Services at Premier Banks, where I lead initiatives involving data analysis, business intelligence, reporting, and automation. My professional experience includes developing executive performance scorecards, branch analytics dashboards, and automated reporting solutions that transform complex financial and operational data into actionable business insights. I regularly work with SQL, Python, Excel, and data visualization tools to clean datasets, identify trends, validate calculations, analyze performance, and communicate findings to organizational leadership. I can help students learn data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, descriptive statistics, data visualization, KPI development, and interpreting analytical results. My teaching approach focuses on breaking complex concepts into understandable steps, explaining the reasoning behind each technique, and using practical examples that connect classroom concepts to real-world business applications.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

As VP of Data Services at a community bank, much of my work is taking reports people rebuild by hand every month and making them run on their own. I use Excel formulas and lookups, pivot tables, Power Query and VBA to clean up messy exports, reconcile lists, and build workbooks that refresh with one click. I can help with everything from the basics and formatting to lookups, pivot tables, data cleanup and automation. Lessons use realistic business data, so what you learn carries straight into your class or your job.
Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

I currently lead data services at a community bank, where PowerPoint is an important part of how I communicate technical information, data findings and new technology to different audiences. I regularly use presentations to explain analysis and business insights, and I also provide organizational training on artificial intelligence and how employees can use AI effectively in their work. Because of that experience, I can help with much more than simply learning where PowerPoint's buttons are. I can teach you how to build an effective presentation from the beginning: deciding what information belongs on each slide, organizing your story, choosing appropriate charts and visuals, simplifying complicated information, and designing slides that support the speaker instead of distracting from them. I can also help with slide layouts, themes, charts, tables, images, SmartArt, alignment, animations, transitions, speaker notes and professional formatting. Just as importantly, we can discuss what to do and what not to do when presenting, including avoiding overcrowded slides, reading directly from the screen, using unnecessary animations, presenting data without context and overwhelming an audience with technical detail. My background in data science and business allows me to help students and professionals turn complicated material into presentations that are clear, polished and persuasive. Whether you are preparing a school presentation, business report, training session, data presentation or executive-style deck, I can help you improve both the PowerPoint itself and the way you communicate the material to your audience.
Python

Python

I use Python as VP of Data Services at a community bank and in my own projects, mostly for cleaning data, automating repetitive work, and moving data between systems. I built the Company Valuation Lab, which uses a Python ETL pipeline to pull public SEC filings into PostgreSQL for financial modeling, and I learned Python as part of my Data Science degree at Winona State University. My lessons start with what beginners and career changers need first: variables, loops and functions, reading files, and working with data in pandas. We practice on realistic business data, so what you learn carries straight into school projects or your job.
SQL

SQL

SQL is the core of my job as VP of Data Services at a community bank, where I designed and built the bank's data warehouse on Microsoft SQL Server and write T-SQL for reporting, data quality checks and data pipelines. I also use PostgreSQL in my own projects, including the Company Valuation Lab, which stores and models public SEC financial data. I can teach everything from SELECT, WHERE and JOINs to GROUP BY, subqueries, CTEs and window functions, plus how to design tables that stay clean. We practice on realistic business data, so you learn to answer the kinds of questions employers actually ask.
