I'm Laila (Lie-la). I graduated cum laude with a double major in Psychology and English. I was also awarded Distinction in English, given to only 10 students per graduating class who graduate summa cum laude with an exceptional writing portfolio. I also hold a Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and a Level 1 CRLA tutoring certification, earned through four years as a writing and research tutor at my college’s writing center.
I began tutoring in grades 11–12, helping peers prepare for our IB Higher Level Psychology exams. In junior year of college, I served as a Supplemental Instruction Leader, teaching Freshman Introduction to Psychology and creating mock quizzes and exams to help students prepare for course assessments.
At the writing center, I also worked with small groups of ESL freshmen each fall semester, helping them develop research writing, structure, and academic argument skills for Freshmen Writing courses.
My teaching philosophy starts with understanding where the student currently is. From there, we identify three achievable goals and break them into smaller steps to create steady progress. I adapt to all learning styles and also coach students on study strategies, goal-setting, and time management, since these skills strongly impact learning outcomes.
I value clear communication and mutual respect for time. If a student is sick or unavailable, please cancel or reschedule at least 36 hours in advance. Cancellations incur a 50% of session fee to account for preparation time. If a session is rescheduled immediately, the fee will be applied toward the new session. Missing the rescheduled session will result in full charges for both sessions.
Before starting, I offer a free 15-minute intake call (with the student or parent) to discuss goals, expectations, and the expected length of tutoring. This helps ensure we are a good fit before moving forward.
