I'm Laila (Lie-la). I graduated cum laude with a double major in Psychology and English. I was also awarded Distinction in English, given to only 10 students per graduating class who graduate summa cum laude with an exceptional writing portfolio. I also hold a Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and a Level 1 CRLA tutoring certification, earned through four years as a writing and research tutor at my college’s writing center.

I began tutoring in grades 11–12, helping peers prepare for our IB Higher Level Psychology exams. In junior year of college, I served as a Supplemental Instruction Leader, teaching Freshman Introduction to Psychology and creating mock quizzes and exams to help students prepare for course assessments.

At the writing center, I also worked with small groups of ESL freshmen each fall semester, helping them develop research writing, structure, and academic argument skills for Freshmen Writing courses.

My teaching philosophy starts with understanding where the student currently is. From there, we identify three achievable goals and break them into smaller steps to create steady progress. I adapt to all learning styles and also coach students on study strategies, goal-setting, and time management, since these skills strongly impact learning outcomes.

I value clear communication and mutual respect for time. If a student is sick or unavailable, please cancel or reschedule at least 36 hours in advance. Cancellations incur a 50% of session fee to account for preparation time. If a session is rescheduled immediately, the fee will be applied toward the new session. Missing the rescheduled session will result in full charges for both sessions.

Before starting, I offer a free 15-minute intake call (with the student or parent) to discuss goals, expectations, and the expected length of tutoring. This helps ensure we are a good fit before moving forward.

Career Development

Career Development

As a graduate intern at Kearney International Student Center at Minnesota State University Mankato, I worked with both international students across all undergraduate majors as well as across some academically at-risk of losing their scholarships students from College of Business on analyzing their student needs and working together with the school's career development office and Kearney student visa advisors to put together international student visa-compliant company reach-outs for segmented career fairs to improve post-graduation job prospects and alleviate job market navigation confusion. I have done similar work while taking undergrad I-O Psychology at St. Olaf College, as President of Psychology Club for the juniors in my major. I am very passionate about this type of talks and constantly stay up-to-date on the impacts of AI and automation, pros and cons of entrepreneurship and how the world of work is changing in this very selective job market that we are in and I know my passion for the metrics of preparation as well as the sheer breadth of knowledge on this topic from all angles of the economy will be an asset to any student I mentor in this area.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have 4 years of experience as a research and writing tutor across all subjects at my college’s writing center, along with 3 years of experience tutoring ESL college freshmen in essay writing. I received distinction in IB English across both 11th and 12th grade cohorts at my international school and later earned distinction in the English major in college, awarded to 1 of 10 students graduating summa cum laude based on a 250-page writing portfolio. My work spans academic essays, research writing, and creative writing, and I have also won two undergraduate poetry contests and published my work. These experiences allow me to support students with essay structure, argument development, research skills, and clear academic writing.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

I worked as Graduate intern on both creating behaviorally anchored rating scales for interviews, behaviorally anchored rating scales for training newly appointed university department heads in student-teacher conflict resolution soft skills as well as designed graduate school interview battery tests. I have also taken part in several panel interviews for Minnesota State Mankato university's international student office director position as well as new graduate intern hiring in Jan 2022. Prior to that I created interview guides for, hired and trained for Psychology Club Executive members in St. Olaf College Psychology department, and conducted interviews for hiring new tutors for St. Olaf Writing Center 2020-2021 cohort. My graduate studies taught me Employee Selection, Psychometrics and Learning and Development coursework for this work.
