About Mary Ellen

Bio

After a few decades of teaching middle and high school English, from Basic to AP, I have begun to tutor. When I retired, I escaped Minnesota winter weather by teaching English Language Learners. I've worked winters in India (6), Thailand (2) and most recently, Athens, Greece (5...last 2 on Zoom).

I have taught ACT English & Reading courses for several years. Two years ago, I began working with students preparing for the IELTS and TOEFL English writing and conversation.

I tutored in-person IELTS and TOEFL students in Athens until the first week of April, of 2022, and am now delighted to be meeting new students on Zoom.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

My ACT writing students were well-served when I taught them in a classroom setting ; working in a tutorial setting offers young people like your student a great chance to improve their writing.
English

English

For over two decades, I have taught basic as well as advanced high school writing, grammar, vocabulary, and literature. I love the one-on-one part of tutoring, and online work makes the experience rewarding for my students: I have many online resources students can practice with me as well as on their own. I offer a (FREE) 20-minute consult to see if we are a good FIT!
Grammar

Grammar

I.love.teaching.grammar! And usage! And punctuation! These elements - GUP - in isolation are fun to learn; once mastered, they improve anybody's writing clarity, and with practice, style. Over the years, I've done both: taught the 3 elements in isolation, especially as prep for SAT or ACT exams, and in composition. I love looking at a student's written work and teaching grammar in that context.
IELTS

IELTS

I have taught English and composition for over a decade. More recently, I have tutored students online in speaking and composition for the IELTS. Currently, I teach students online who are seeking to take the IELTS for Canada, the UK, and the United States
Literature

Literature

My high school students, from Basic to Advanced Placement, met their goals every semester. More recently, I earned a certificate in ELL and have worked this year with IELTS and TOEFL students, in both the written and oral parts required for those. It's been great fun, and the students have gone on to great success.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

I have both taught an SAT preparation course and tutored individual students for this portion of the test. Based as it is on a sense of language, the Writing portion of the SAT simply needs a few sessions of coaching, to see what the questions are actually looking for, along with some timed practice (which students can do on their own, between sessions).
TOEFL

TOEFL

After 2-plus decades teaching English lit and composition at a private school in the US, I retired and started to travel to warmer [than Minnesota] climates in the winter. I have worked in the south of India (90F in January!) ; northern Thailand (80 in January!). For the past 6 years I have worked both in person and on Zoom, teaching ELL to refugees in Greece and Germany.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As Christopher wrote in his review, vocabulary is great fun - explaining, giving tips for memorizing, as well as for figuring out words in context.

Wonderful Tutor

My daughter who is in 10th grade needed help with diagraming sentence. Mary-Ellen was fantastic. They went over her class notes and worked on some practice sentences.

Excellent mastery of vocabulary

Mary-Ellen helped me with my SAT vocabulary. Her knowledge is amazing! She was able to help me find related words that helped me guess what more complicated words are by going at the roots. I knew that regicide meant something to do with a king because I have studied Latin, but when Mary-Ellen pointed me to homicide, I realized that it must mean to kill a king. Another example is ascendant, which I didn't know. She asked me if I knew ascend and then I was able to go over the practice question and get it right. She's really brilliant. She studied Shakespeare at Oxford and had a career as a high school English and French teacher.
