About Justin

Bio

I have been teaching for over 30 years. Almost all of that has been at the university level. In recent years, that's typically been in classrooms of more than 100 students. While I enjoy that, I really miss the opportunity to interact with students more closely, working together through tough concepts and processes. That's why I've decided to become a tutor--to get back to what I love most about teaching--seeing a student light up when they "get it."

I am trained as a geophysicist. That means I use advanced mathematics (calculus, differential equations, linear algebra), physics (mechanics, waves) and programming (R, C, FORTRAN) on a daily basis. I have the good fortune to teach all of these subjects at the university level (University of Minnesota and University of California).

I have a Ph.D. in geophysics, which requires thorough knowledge of linear algebra. I have taught linear algebra at the University of Minnesota and University of California on multiple occasions. I use calculus in my job almost every day. I've taught it at the college level and I've helped my children through it in school.

Let me know how I can help you! For the time being, I would prefer to tutor remotely. I've gotten very proficient with Zoom as a remote teaching platform in classes of 100+ students. I can make it work and work well in a one-on-one tutoring environment.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra is the basis of all mathematics: calculus, statistics, differential equations--you name it, it uses algebra. As a geophysicist, I work with mathematics daily. And I teach my subject matter using it. More importantly, I have children who have struggled with algebra at times and have needed my help. I know it well, but I thoroughly understand how hard it can seem at times.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I've taught multi-variate calculus. I've taught linear algebra. I've taught differential equations. All of those advanced subjects rely on algebra and require the instructor to be agile with algebra. I know the subject and love teaching it.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

In addition to having taught differential equations at the University level, I use differential equations in my day to day research as a seismologist. A mix of calculus and linear algebra, differential equations are an excellent test of your math bonafides, and are one of my favorite subjects to teach. Let me help you love them as much as I do.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have a Ph.D. in geophysics, which requires thorough knowledge of linear algebra. I continue to use it on a daily basis. More importantly, I have taught linear algebra at the University of Minnesota and University of California on multiple occasions. It is one of my two favorite subjects in mathematics (differential equations is the other).
R

R

I have been an active user of R for nearly a decade. I teach two graduate-level statistics courses that rely on R and and R-Studio, as well as an "Advanced R" course that focuses on package authoring, Shiny application and GitHub integration.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Justin taught me how to complete R Script for a set of animated data visualizations. He also helped me to understand how to address errors that required data scrubbing. Lastly he taught me how to receive and set up API key for tidycensus package. He knows his stuff.

Great Tutor

I will keep requesting Justin as long as I need help. He was very prepared for the lesson and wasted no time. He was very thorough in his explanation of what the R commands we’re doing. Highly recommended.

Lovely tutor with lots of knowledge.

Justin went through different libraries that can be used for plotting PCA in R as well as explain PCR, how to interpret the graphs and the principal behind it. Very helpful and highly reccomend.

Encouraging, a genius, and time-efficient!

I came to Justin with an 3,2000 sets of data that I needed help running and understanding in R. I thought it was going to take all day, but we got it all done in just a few hours! I learned so much along the way. He was so patient with me, he answered all my questions, and helped me get a deeper understanding of my project and what I was doing in R. I truly appreciate how much he prepared for our session too. He was happy to read my methodology before hand, and he came prepared ready to get started. Overall, very happy with my session, and honestly, I wish I could pay him even more as a thank you.

Patient tutor with relevant expertise

I learned how to recreate tables based on existing code. Justin helped me identify different ways to approach problems. Would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for different ways to create code for a particular dataset.

Justin is honestly the best! Super knowledgeable, patient and promot

I needed help with R coding really last minute and Justin made himself available on my schedule. He took his time walking me through what was required, explaining what he was doing along the way. He was also really prompt with his responses and made sure I got all my questions answered before the session wrapped up!

Super Awesome!

Justin walked me through every step of my R assignment so that I could understand what code to use and why. He was patient and thorough. I would highly recommend him for any R student. Very pleased with my session. Worth every penny.

Knowledgeable and patient

Justin R helped me to learn how to code in R for a certain model. He explained it to me efficiently and clearly and was patient and answered all my questions to understand how the code works. I would be happy to have more lessons with him again. Thanks a lot, Justin
