I'm a math and statistics tutor with a B.A. in pure mathematics from Macalester College (2014) and an M.S. in biostatistics from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (2019). I've taught about three of the last ten years in a few settings: as a graduate teaching assistant and tutor for master's of public health students in applied statistics, data analysis, and SAS over two academic years; as a classroom math and English teacher abroad, where my math students ranged from fifth grade through high school; and now as a private one-on-one tutor in the Twin Cities, most recently working with adult learners in geometry, precalculus, and undergraduate probability and statistics. I've also written college-level statistics instructional content for Study.

In my teaching I emphasize conceptual understanding alongside fluency with the procedures; I believe the two are complementary. My approach in a session is to ask questions and let you derive as much as you can yourself, stepping in with a more specific question or a nudge when you get stuck, so that you build the real understanding that lets you progress further in math. One of my current students started with reviewing fraction arithmetic and, over a few months of weekly sessions, worked up through geometry proofs to her first look at calculus, mostly by deriving the results herself.

I'm strongest in statistics and probability, from an intro course through inference, regression, and biostatistics, and I'm equally comfortable with algebra, precalculus, calculus, linear algebra, and some proof-based higher math, as well as SAT, ACT, and GRE quantitative prep. I especially enjoy working with college and graduate students and with adults returning to math for a program requirement, a career change, or just for the sake of learning. I'm available evenings and weekends, in person in Saint Paul and Minneapolis or online.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I hold a B.A. in Pure Mathematics from Macalester College (2014) and an M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Minnesota (2019), and I completed the full calculus sequence through multivariable, linear algebra, and differential equations before college through the University of Minnesota's UMTYMP program. I've taught math in the classroom from fifth grade through high school and now tutor adult learners privately in the Twin Cities; one student went from a fraction-arithmetic refresher to deriving the volume of a sphere with her own integrals over a few months of weekly sessions. I teach limits, derivatives, and integrals by building them from what you already know, so the rules come with their reasons attached. I'm comfortable with AP Calculus AB and BC, college Calculus I through III, and the calculus that shows up in statistics and economics courses.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I hold a B.A. in Pure Mathematics from Macalester College (2014) and an M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Minnesota (2019). I taught math in the classroom from fifth grade through high school and now tutor adult learners privately in the Twin Cities; most of my recent sessions have been precalculus material, taking one student from arithmetic through exponent rules, logarithms, functions and their inverses, trigonometry, geometry proofs, and complex numbers over several months of weekly work. I teach the ideas as a connected structure rather than a list of rules, so exponents lead naturally to logarithms and the unit circle to the trig identities. I'm comfortable with the full precalculus course, including the algebra review most students need along the way.
Probability

Probability

I hold an M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (2019) and a B.A. in Pure Mathematics from Macalester College (2014), so I can work both the theory of probability and its applied side. As a graduate TA and tutor for MPH students over two academic years, I taught applied statistics and data analysis, and I've written college-level statistics instructional content for Study.com. Most recently I've been tutoring an adult learner privately through an undergraduate probability course, working the derivations in the textbook together rather than just the formulas. I'm comfortable from counting and conditional probability through random variables, distributions, expectation, and limit theorems.
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

I hold a B.A. in Pure Mathematics from Macalester College (2014), where real analysis was the course that turned me into a mathematician, and I went on to deeper coursework in topology, complex analysis, and functional analysis. I've done the full sequence of epsilon-delta arguments, sequences and series, continuity and uniform continuity, differentiation, Riemann integration, and the topology of the real line, and I'm comfortable with the metric-space generalizations. As a tutor I focus on how to read a definition, unpack what a proof is actually asking for, and build the habit of writing arguments that would survive a grader. I've taught math from fifth grade through graduate-level applied statistics and currently tutor adult learners privately in the Twin Cities.
Statistics

Statistics

I hold an M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (2019) and a B.A. in Pure Mathematics from Macalester College (2014). Over two academic years I was a graduate teaching assistant and tutor for master's of public health students in applied statistics, data analysis, and SAS, and I've written college-level statistics instructional content for Study.com. I've since worked as a software developer and data analyst and most recently tutor adult learners privately in undergraduate probability and statistics. I cover intro stats through inference, regression, and biostatistics, with an emphasis on what a p-value or a confidence interval actually means rather than which button to press.
