I have several years of experience as an instructor and teaching assistant in linguistics and language classes at the university level, as well as six years of experience tutoring children and adults in Spanish, ESL, writing, math, and many other areas. I am an avid language learner - I have studied many languages from all over the world, including French, Arabic, Swahili, and K'iche' (Maya). I love using my expertise in linguistics to help students improve pronunciation and grammar by understanding the science of how language works.

Linguistics

I obtained my PhD in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. My areas of specialization are phonetics and phonology (the study of sounds) as well as descriptive and documentary linguistics (recording, describing and strengthening previously understudied languages). My doctoral dissertation describes several aspects of the prosody (pronunciation and intonation) of K'iche', a Mayan language spoken in Guatemala. I have taught introductory linguistics courses and been a teaching assistant in courses on phonetics, speech science, and language learning.

I have several years of experience teaching and tutoring children and adults in Spanish, ESL, linguistics, and other areas. exceptional

Elizabeth is a truly exceptional tutor. Her deep knowledge of linguistics is immediately apparent, but what sets her apart is the way she shares that knowledge—with patience, care, and a genuine respect for the learning process. She never rushes to provide answers. Instead, she asks the right questions, nudges gently in the right direction, and gives you space to think critically and arrive at your own understanding. Her teaching style is empowering. Rather than spoon-feeding information, Elizabeth creates an environment where you feel supported in developing your own insights. This approach has not only helped me grasp complex linguistic concepts but has also significantly improved my analytical thinking skills. I come away from the session with a stronger sense of confidence in my abilities, and a clearer, more structured way of approaching problems.

Elizabeth really is a knowledgeable and patient tutor. She was great!

Elizabeth helped me with Phonological analysis, rule ordering, rule transparency and natural classes. She explained everything clearly and did a great job of pacing her tutoring to match the speed of my learning. She was patient and open to questions and willing to be discursive when I needed it. She was also kind and supportive throughout. Highly recommended!

Amazing tutor, Kind, and Knowledgeable!

Elizabeth has been an amazing tutor over the past weeks! She has been helping me understand the material in my Phonology class and has done so with kindness and patience. I'm one who doesn't pick up things right away but she has been incredibly patient with me. She also knows the material so well that I trust her without a single doubt in mind! Excellent Tutor and amazing person!

Talented and knowledgeable

It is clear that Elizabeth is not only incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to many aspects of Linguistics, but also able to communicate complex topics in an approachable way. I was feeling so frustrated at my inability to understand certain topics and after my session felt that the class I'm taking is now much more manageable. Thanks Elizabeth!
