Does this sound familiar? Whenever I excelled in a subject, it was because the teacher loved what they were teaching and loved helping students learn. That’s what I offer.

I love to help people of all ages and skill levels start right where they and build in their strengths. If you’ve felt intimidated or have struggled to keep up, I am here for you! If you are ready to soar beyond those around you, let’s do it!

My top expert areas are in writing of all kinds and in beginning to intermediate German (more about that later). I’ve been a successful real-world writer and editor for large and small businesses, for the web and digital marketing, for magazines and newspapers, for nonprofits and higher education, and for government agencies. And in every job, I’ve created more great writers around me, by sharing how to do it and by giving helpful feedback on each piece of work.

My schooling includes a bachelor’s degree in German and a master’s degree in Communications (both with honors). Every single class, whether it was about writing or not, made me a better writer in some way. I can help you learn better writing in any area of study!

As a tutor I work with you on the material you need to focus on - bring your current lessons and assignments, bring your past work that shows where we need to focus, or bring your future learning goals and we’ll map out a path and get there step by step.

My tutoring experience: I’ve helped students succeed as a tutor in English as a Second Language, as a German teacher at the elementary, as a reading tutor for elementary students, as a German teacher for a weekend German program, and as a college-level teaching assistant. I have helped hundreds of people become better writers through workplace coaching. Whether you need to move from beginner to basi, basic to good, or good to great — let’s get started!

I respond very quickly to messages. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a free 15-minute session to meet and see if the fit feels positive.

ACT English

ACT English

Starting in grade school, I always scored in the top 5 to 10 percent on standardized tests — because I learned how to be smarter and more effective in the way I approached the questions. I can help you learn and practice some tools and approaches that can help you show your best work on the ACT and other standardized tests.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

Don’t hate me for this, but I knew how to read a very simple book before kindergarten. Why? Because my big sister was already a great teacher at 8 years old. That showed me that getting the right help makes all the difference in becoming a sharper, more confident reader. Every test that involves reading became actually fun for me, and that ability to quickly grasp key points and follow a story line has been a huge help through elementary, middle, and high school — and gaining scholarships and acceptance into college and graduate school through high scores on the ACT as well as PSAT, SAT, and GRE. I absolutely love helping kids, teens, and adults learn to be smarter, more efficient readers.
English

English

Using the English language well can open so many doors for you. I’ve used my expertise in English to build a great career as a writer, editor, content strategist, and content designer. Along the way, I have always been the one people turn to when they want to make their writing better, be more persuasive, express their thoughts and views better, explain complicated topics, and do better in school and at work. Let’s start where you are and unpack the tools that will make your English skills stronger and more natural for you.
German

German

Building on 8 years of German study in high school and college, so spent my junior year in Heidelberg, married a native German speaker I met there, and still use German daily to read and watch videos and films online, follow the news on ARD Tagesschau daily, and speak and email with friends and family in Germany. I taught intermediate German as a college teaching assistant and also taught German to the children of German expats in the US. And I use online language-learning apps to make sure I am still expanding my own fluency in specialized topics. I’d love to help you gain confidence and expertise in speaking, writing, reading, and listening to German!
Grammar

Grammar

Throughout school and my career, I’ve been the nerd who can help people structure their words better. Not just in order to be proper, but to be effective and confident in writing and speaking. I can help you understand grammar in a way that shows the sense of it and how it actually helps you get through to your audience more effectively. You may never love it like I do, but you can grasp it and use it well!
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have 15+ years working as an in-demand writer, editor, copy editor, and proofer for newspapers, magazines, websites, social media, email, presentations, research papers, and basically any type of writing out there. You can learn from me how to quickly make sure that a batch of text is clear, correct, and ready for prime time. I’ll be happy to help you learn pro tips and tricks for proofing your own or others’ work, as well as how to use automated proofing tools combined with good human judgment, and how to watch out for common errors and misses that can trip up many writers.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a writer in all kinds of fields, from marketing to academics, I have learned the power of choosing just the right word. Not always the fanciest or most Impressive word, but the one that really reaches your audience and helps them understand or feel something. Let’s build your vocabulary by learning new words, but also by learning how to take smart guesses about what a new word might mean, and by practicing when and where to drop in a better, more powerful word to get the job done.
Writing

Writing

I have been writing professionally for 4 decades and the most rewarding part of those years has been helping other people become better writers. I’ve worked as a copy editor, magazine editor, academic editor, creative director, and the one who hires and develops great writing teams. From the very basic start through the tips that will make your work sing, I love every stage of learning to write better.
