I have two years of experience tutoring Spanish. The students I worked with in the past have been in either middle school or early high school in a one-on-one format.
I still remember working with my first student as a tutor in high school, Will. His mother was a family friend who reached out to me to help her son who was struggling in Spanish. I already knew Will because he had played sports with my younger brother. I remember how good it felt when Will's mom told me that he achieved a full letter grade higher on his next exam two weeks after I started working with him (from a C to a B). It gave me the feeling that I could make an impact, and also the belief that people can learn anything if they feel comfortable enough to try.
I continued to study Spanish throughout college. As a junior, I was accepted into an advanced study abroad program in South America, where I lived with a host family and took courses (taught in Spanish) at La Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso in Chile.
The five months I spent living abroad gave me the foundation I needed to master the language to the best of my ability. This was accomplished through study, travel and spending time with my host family (Felipe, Andres & Claudia).
I only appreciated the true value of this experience when I traveled to Spain with my wife two years ago. I was able to negotiate with a concierge at our hotel to get a new room, to converse with our taxi drivers and to order us tasty food as we traveled from Barcelona to San Sebastian.
