I've worked as a writing tutor for more than ten years, and as an English professor for more the same amount. I've taught composition, creative writing, scriptwriting, public speaking, and science-fiction literature.

Though I’ve taught extensively at the college level, I’ve also tutored every type and age of students, from those in elementary school learning spelling and grammar, to high school seniors writing their college application letters. I’m very open and excited to teach any English subject, and thrive on students asking questions. Whether it's analyzing Shakespeare, learning the fundamentals of composition, or how to write a short story, I’m happy to help. I strive to meet my students at whatever level they’re at, and make sure the subject is exciting and useful for them.

A little on my background: I hold an MFA in Creative Writing with a fiction emphasis from the California College of the Arts and a BA in English (with a Minor in Spanish) from Black Hills State University, where I graduated with honors. My professional background spans over a decade of college-level teaching in composition, critical thinking, creative writing, and humanities at institutions including Santa Clara University, UC Santa Cruz, and the University of Silicon Valley. I have also held administrative roles in career development, learning resource management, and academic advising, giving me a broad perspective on student success and institutional operations. In addition to teaching, I am an active fiction writer with publications in numerous literary magazines and anthologies, and I have experience editing literary publications and organizing reading series. My interdisciplinary expertise encompasses media studies, rhetoric, dystopian literature, screenwriting, and ESL instruction.

In my spare time outside of teaching, I write science fiction. When not writing, I enjoy gardening and hiking the landscapes of Minnesota.

Approved Subjects

Classics

Classics

During my undergrad I studied Plato, Aristotle, Homer, Horace, and Virgil both through classics classes and through literature classes. I also studied the theories of the ancients during drama class in my undergrad and screenwriting class during my MFA. Finally, I have extensive knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman world through undergraduate courses as well as private study.
College Counseling

College Counseling

Through my job at two local tutoring centers, I taught two college essay writing courses during the summer of 2013. In these classes I covered all of the essays needed and how to write them in detail. We also reviewed how to go through a college interview and what questions to ask during a tour. I've also advised a number of individual students on how and where to apply for college.
English

English

I've taught at the college level for the past five years, and tutored students of all ages for a decade before that. I can teach any English or writing subject, but specialize in creative writing, composition, and science-fiction literature.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

During my undergraduate degree, I took many classes on linguistics, history of the English language, and TESL. From 2010 to 2011, I served as the senior writing coach for the Learning Resource Center at the California College of the Arts. During my MFA in creative writing at CCA, I primarily tutored ESL students. I worked with students with many different native languages and a wide variety of skill levels. During the summer of 2011, I was the teaching assistant and lead coach for CCA’s Summer English Intensive, an ESL-focused composition course for incoming international students. During the first half of the summer, I lead high school and undergraduate students in across-the-Bay tours, helped them adjust to U.S. culture, and provided tutoring for their writing assignments. At my current employment, I continue to work with many students learning English as a second language.
Grammar

Grammar

I've taught all parts of English grammar in introductory and regular composition courses, as well as in ESL courses.
Literature

Literature

I've taught at the college level for the past five years, and tutored students of all ages for a decade before that. I can teach any English or writing subject, and have a wide knowledge of English literature, from medieval text up to the modern day. My research specialty is utopian literature and science-fiction, but I'm happy to teach any genre or level of literature.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I've taught multiple course on public speaking over the past five years, and tutored the subject extensively for a decade before that. As both a college professor and published author, I get to practice my public speaking often, and love teaching students the nuisances of the subject, including strong body language, projection, and convincing rhetoric. What I enjoy the most is when a student learns to be less nervous and more comfortable speaking in front of a crowd.

Great Teacher, very informative

Leonardo C helped me a lot with my dystopian poem and gave me more of an insight of what it should look like and feedback on what should be changed.

Excellent college application writing session

Leonard is a great tutor! I scheduled an appointment with him because I needed help editing my personal essays for graduate school applications. Leonard helped me deconstruct some of the essay prompts by brainstorming with me in a fun, interactive way. We talked about my personal strengths and past successes and how I can leverage those qualities depending on what program I am applying for. He obviously has lots of experience guiding students through personal letters and asked detailed questions about my major and background. He ended the session by giving me some thoughtful feedback and potential homework before we schedule a follow-up lesson.

Leonard has gotten my children excited about writing!

We've had Leonard now for two writing sessions and the kids have already written some great paragraphs, better than they would have done previously. Plus they have learnt how to write "tankas." Leonard has tools up his sleeves from previous writing teaching experiences to get the children creative. We are enjoying the sessions so far and plan to extend the sessions into half-day summer camps for the summer where they will do creative writing, reading aloud skills, and presentation skills too. We're very happy to have found Leonard!
