Hello! My name is Tom, and I'm a graduate student at the University of Minnesota working towards a PhD in Environmental Engineering. I use tools of analytical chemistry to better understand water contamination from pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other similar organic chemicals. I am from Massachusetts, and I graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a B.A. in Economics, B.S. in Civil Engineering, and M.S. in Environmental Engineering. I then worked as a water and sanitation engineer in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru for two years before moving back to the U.S. in summer of 2026.

As a student at UMass, was a tutor and teaching assistant for four years. During this time, I supported university students in Physics, Economics, Statistics, Calculus, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Structural Engineering courses. During my master's degree studies, I worked as a supervisor of academic supplemental instruction programs at the university's learning resource center, where I developed and led trainings on learning theory, informal assessment, and hybrid-flexible learning for STEM university students. I supported over 2000 students in both one-on-one settings and in groups of up to 200.

I love helping students learn. I am motivated by the wonderful teachers, professors, and mentors I've worked with, and I hope to develop the skills and growth the confidence of my students through this platform. I support math, chemistry, and Spanish language courses. I am based out of Minneapolis, or I am happy to join a student online. You can reach me through the Wyzant website, and I give quick responses. I look forward to chatting with you!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have a strong background in mathematics through my undergraduate and graduate studies in engineering, where I regularly used algebra, functions, equations, and quantitative problem-solving. I have experience helping students break down challenging mathematical concepts into clear, manageable steps and develop problem-solving strategies rather than simply memorizing procedures. I can tutor Algebra 1 topics including linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, functions, graphing, exponents, polynomials, and applications involving word problems.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have a strong background in mathematics through my undergraduate and graduate studies in engineering, where I regularly used algebra, functions, equations, and quantitative problem-solving. I have experience helping students break down challenging mathematical concepts into clear, manageable steps and develop problem-solving strategies rather than simply memorizing procedures. I can tutor Algebra 2 topics including quadratic and polynomial functions, systems of equations, exponents and logarithms, rational expressions, complex numbers, sequences and series, and graphing.
Calculus

Calculus

I have a strong mathematical background through my undergraduate and graduate studies in engineering and economics, where I regularly used tools of calculus to quantitative and scientific problems. I can tutor topics including limits, derivatives, integrals, applications of derivatives and integrals, related rates, optimization, and differential equations. I was a calculus tutor for several semesters during my undergraduate studies.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a strong background in chemistry through my undergraduate and graduate studies in environmental engineering, along with extensive hands-on experience in environmental chemistry research. I have worked with topics including chemical equilibria, acid-base chemistry, reaction kinetics, water chemistry, analytical chemistry, and the behavior of contaminants in aquatic systems. I have also used laboratory techniques including chromatography, spectroscopy, and other analytical methods in academic research.
Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering

I have a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering, with experience applying engineering principles to water, wastewater, and environmental systems. My academic and research background includes water treatment, fluid mechanics, water chemistry, environmental processes, and quantitative engineering analysis. I have also gained practical experience working on drinking-water infrastructure and treatment systems in rural communities, giving me experience connecting engineering concepts to real-world applications. I was a tutor for Statics, Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, and Fluid Mechanics at the undergraduate level for two years.
Geometry

Geometry

I have a strong mathematical background through my undergraduate and graduate studies in engineering, where I regularly applied geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and quantitative problem-solving. I can tutor topics including angles, similarity and congruence, coordinate geometry, circles, area and volume, transformations, and geometric proofs.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have a strong mathematical background through my undergraduate and graduate studies in engineering, where I regularly worked with functions, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. I can tutor precalculus topics including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, as well as equations, graphing, sequences, and complex numbers. My goal is to help students develop a strong conceptual foundation and the problem-solving skills they will need for calculus and other advanced mathematics courses.
Spanish

Spanish

I lived an worked in a rural community in Amazonas, Peru, for over two years. I was a water and sanitation volunteer with a U.S. government agency, and I was the only English speaker in my village. I communicated exclusively in Spanish, and taught English language classes to students at the elementary, high school, and adult learner levels. I communicate at an "Advanced High" Spanish level according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
Statistics

Statistics

I have a strong quantitative background through my undergraduate and graduate studies in engineering and economics, where I used statistics and data analysis to interpret scientific and real-world data. My experience includes working with experimental data, analyzing trends and relationships between variables, and applying statistical methods to environmental engineering research. I can tutor topics including descriptive statistics, probability, distributions, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, correlation and regression, and interpreting statistical results. I tutored university-level statistics and probability courses for one year.
