Hello, I’m Ms. Elizabeth! I have 7 years of experience tutoring elementary students in literacy, from far below grade level to just below benchmark. I LOVE empowering students to develop their literacy skills, and build confidence in their ability to work hard and succeed!
I help students practice fundamental early literacy skills, including phonological and phonemic awareness (sound patterns of language), phonics (relationship of sounds and letters), and fluency (reading with accuracy, appropriate speed, and expression). Mistakes are normal, we get feedback, and try again, because practice makes progress!
I served as an elementary literacy tutor with Reading Corps, working daily with K-3 urban public school students, using research-based interventions and regular skills checks (assessments) to measure and maximize growth. I then coached for a year, working with RC tutors in small-town and rural public schools.
I now tutor online and have used Amplify’s mCLASS interventions and DIBELS progress monitoring, both from the University of Oregon, and UFLI Foundations curriculum from the University of Florida Literacy Institute, all built on the science of reading!
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and Japanese Language and Literature, with a minor in Medieval Studies. I also have a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, and have worked in urban public elementary and middle school library media centers as an aide and media specialist. I have also earned the UCSD Extended Studies Copyediting Certificate.
I am an advocate for linguistic justice. I value and validate the different ways that students speak (be it speaking various dialects including African American English, learning English as a second language, or having speech differences), and I work to bridge the linguistic skills students already have to the standard[ized] American English taught in schools.
I’m from Minneapolis, MN, and live with my husband and our two cats
