I have decades of experience teaching the many facets of English as a corporate consultant, adjunct professor, and volunteer with non-profit literacy centers. I have a Ph.D. in adult education, with specialization in adult reading and study skills, a secondary teaching credential in English, certification in teaching English as a second language, and USCIS Citizenship exam training.

If you are struggling with getting those essays and research papers written for your college classes, I can teach you an effective and efficient process I learned in my many years as a corporate writing consultant. My college students tell me it does help reduce the stress of having to get a paper finished.

Are you trying to pass your citizenship exam, trying to navigate life and work and school in English as a new language, or wanting to polish the accent away? I have been a volunteer, corporate consultant, and adjunct professor of ESL for a long time. And, I have lived and worked in other countries, so I understand the challenge of trying to communicate in an adult way without sounding like a toddler just learning to talk or feeling like my accent is getting in the way.

I would love to help you improve your English, whether you are a beginner or a very advanced learner. During our first meeting, we will talk about your goals, I will identify your current ability, and we will start a learning plan. I have been teaching adult ESL learners in international, corporate, and academic settings for many years. I use this experience and my graduate studies in adult reading and bilingual education to create practical and individualized lessons that meet student objectives. I look forward to meeting you!
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

My students tell me that the approach to writing that I teach makes writing their papers faster and easier. As a corporate writing consultant, I had to write documents on a wide variety of topics on a daily basis. I have not only studied writing, but have actually done writing. I know the challenges!
Praxis

Praxis

I bring to our sessions many years of experience helping professionals prepare for certification exams in reading and writing. I have a doctorate in adult reading, along with standard and graduate level teaching certifications in English. I have had a career as a technical writing consultant, an adjunct college professor of reading and writing, and am now in my "retirement job" of tutoring reading and writing here on Wyzant and teaching ESL for our local adult education program. This background makes me uniquely qualified to help you study for the English language arts, essay, and reading comprehension portions of the Praxis.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

My graduate education included writing a thesis and a dissertation. I have experience in doing research, then writing about it for publication. I not only teach writing, but spent many years as a corporate writing consultant. The process of academic writing extends across many disciplines and has practical application in careers beyond academia.
TOEFL

TOEFL

With more than 20 years of adult ESL teaching experience, I have the tools and methods to help you. We will get you ready for the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections of the TOEFL test. I will assess your capabilities to prioritize our work. We will practice, practice, practice. I will give you homework to help you focus on the language areas that are the most challenging for you. It is hard work, but hard work is good work.
USCIS

USCIS

I would love to help you prepare for your citizenship tests. During our first meeting, I will give you a practice test based on which tests you have and have not taken - reading, writing, civics, and the interview. Some folks just want to have a practice test for me give them a study plan so they can get help from family; others want intensive guided practice for the week or so before their test; and some folks want to take a longer approach, with regular sessions for practice and lots of homework between. With my graduate degree in teaching English as a second language and my USCIS Citizenship Exam training and teaching experience, I am able to give you guidance in what you need to learn and offer my time and materials to help you learn. My goal is to help you build confidence in yourself. I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our country!
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a certified word nerd, I can help adults and college students express concepts in a variety of ways to enhance presentations and writing assignments. I can also help English language learners grow their oral and reading comprehension and smooth out their accents. My experience as a technical writer consultant helped me expand my vocabulary in every which way for assignments in a variety of global corporations. As an avid reader, my vocabulary expands with every new book.
Writing

Writing

I'd be happy to help you with any writing challenges you have. If you want feedback on something you have written, I give very detailed in-text edits and comments, along with helpful tips on writing in general. If you have specific problem areas or want to improve your writing in general, we can individualize a program of guided practice with lots of feedback. If you are not a native English-speaker but need to write school or work papers in English, my strong background in ESL and linguistics has given me the tools to help you. As a technical writing consultant, a community college writing teacher, and a published short story writer, I bring a lot of experience getting myself and others out of writing difficulties.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

I truly couldn't have passed my Linguistics class without Dr. Kate. When I was struggling and facing failure, she provided the guidance I needed to grasp the subject. Dr. Kate assisted me not only with the essay's structure and format but also helped me appreciate writing as storytelling. She showed me how captivating it is to research a topic and develop my own insights. Thank you, Dr. Kate

Knowledgeable and patient teacher

Kate is very knowledgeable, patient, and pleasant. She went into all the details when tutoring my mom to prepare for the USCIS test. I am sure she would also be a great ESL teacher. And her price is very reasonable too. Thanks!

Excellent

We worked with Dr Kate to help my mother-in-law pass the speaking and understanding part of the citizenship exam and Dr Kate amazed us at every step of the way. My mother-in-law had passed the civics part at her first attempt but her English was too rudimentary for the speaking and understanding part. In the 5 weeks we had until her second attempt, Dr Kate was really on top of it, making sure she got ready for anything and everything that might come her way, working with my mother-in-law almost every day to ensure she passed her exam. Dr Kate also impressed us with how tech-savvy she is. We are very grateful for her help.
