I am Hadley! I am an experienced teacher and tutor with a PhD and minor in College Science Teaching. I also hold a M.S. in Environment and Resources, and a B.S. in Biology. I am a lifelong learner drawn to the curiosities of our natural world and understanding the mechanisms underlying their operation, so fostering the same in others is one of my passions.

I have a graduate level science teaching minor and a variety of tutoring experience ranging from middle school to college level and including preparation for AP/IB tests. I have 3 years of college level chemistry and biology lab TA experience and R1 instructor experience. All my degrees have been research based, so I have also mentored undergraduate technicians in the research process. In addition to course content, I am able to provide guidance on effective time management, study techniques, overcoming low self confidence and managing stress.

Main themes of my teaching philosophy include creating a space to develop critical thinking skills and learn from mistakes, while understanding course content. I emphasize development of self-directed, continued learning skills. I strive to illustrate how content may be applied in a “real-world” setting to help them realize the relevance of the topics covered. I believe practice and trial and error are important components of learning the process of scientific inquiry. I implement a variety of instructional techniques and accommodate different student learning styles.

My goal is to benefit the students I work with as much as possible, provide an enjoyable learning environment, and work with them to customize a plan to empower them to reach their learning or testing goals. I believe it’s important to find a good fit between tutor and student, so please feel free to contact me with additional questions or to schedule an online lesson.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I love to learn about the world around me and the processes by which it operates. Helping students do to the same is one of my greatest passions. I love to see light bulbs go off as they connect course concepts to "how the world works."
Botany

Botany

I have a M.S. degree in Environment and Resources with an emphasis in wetlands ecology. Advised by renowned professor of botany, conducted research project assessing use of vegetation in stormwater treatment. Degree included many botany courses. Continue to work in field where implementing knowledge of aquatic plants.
Ecology

Ecology

Ecology is my favorite topic and the focus of my research has been studying natural systems (specifically aquatic). I have been a college professor, tutored, and advised undergraduate research technicians in the field, and I love to expose new learners to the concepts that underlie the world around us.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I have a MS in Environment and Resources from the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the UW-Madison. This degree included graduate level coursework in a variety of subjects ranging but not limited to GIS, environmental policy, ecology, water resources, botany, and agriculture. All of my graduate degrees were research based included coursework in environmental topics. When not tutoring I work at an agency that manages environmental natural resources, so I possess both academic and on the job experience in this subject. I also have experiencing mentoring students and technicians going into this field.
GIS

GIS

I have used ESRI products in my work for over 10 years. During the course of my MS and PhD degrees I pursued GIS coursework. For 5 years I taught a Beginner and Advanced ArcGIS (Desktop initially, then Pro) course at annual meetings of the American Fisheries Society - these trainings were all day, intensive workshops for students and agency practitioners.
