I am Hadley! I have a PhD in Natural Resources with a minor in College Science Teaching. I also hold a M.S. in Environment and Resources, a M.S in Natural Resources, and a B.S. in Biology (summa cum laude). I am a lifelong learner drawn to the curiosities of our natural world and understanding the mechanisms underlying their operation, so fostering the same in others is one of my passions.
I have a graduate level science teaching minor and a diversity of tutoring experience ranging from middle school to college level and including preparation for AP/IB tests. I have 3 years of college level chemistry and biology laboratory teaching assistant experience and served as instructor of record at an R1 institution. All my degrees have been research based, so I have also mentored undergraduate technicians in the research process. In addition to course content, I am also able to provide guidance on effective time management, study techniques, overcoming low self confidence and managing stress related to the classroom.
Main themes of my teaching philosophy include creating a space to develop critical thinking skills and make and learn from mistakes, while incorporating course content. I emphasize development of self-directed, continued learning skills. I strive to illustrate how course content may be applied in a “real-world” setting to help them realize the relevance of the topics covered. I believe practice, understanding context, and trial and error are important components of learning the process of scientific inquiry. I implement a variety of instructional techniques and accommodate different student learning styles and backgrounds.
My goal is to benefit the students I work with as much as possible, provide an enjoyable learning environment, and work with them to customize a plan to empower them to reach their learning or testing goals. I believe it’s important to find a good fit between tutor and student, so please feel free to contact me with additional questions or to schedule an online lesson.
